OpenAI’s ChatGPT platform is experiencing intermittent service disruptions, leaving some users unable to access the AI chatbot while others report slower-than-usual performance. The issues began early Tuesday morning, with global reports emerging across social media platforms and outage monitoring services.
According to data from Downdetector, the first signs of trouble appeared around 3AM ET, affecting users in multiple regions. OpenAI’s official status page confirmed the presence of “elevated error rates and latency” impacting not only ChatGPT but also the company’s API services and its newer Sora tool, which converts text to video. By 5:23AM ET, OpenAI had categorized the situation as a “partial outage” and added a separate entry for ongoing problems with Sora.
The impact appears inconsistent. Some users are encountering error messages such as “Hmm…something seems to have gone wrong,” while others are experiencing extended response times or timeout errors. In contrast, a portion of the user base still has full access to ChatGPT with no noticeable disruptions, suggesting that the outage is not uniform across all accounts or regions.
OpenAI has acknowledged the issue and stated that it is “continuing to investigate,” but has not yet disclosed the root cause or a timeframe for resolution. As of the latest update, the company has not provided an ETA for full restoration of services.
The partial outage highlights the growing dependency on AI-driven tools like ChatGPT, especially for users who rely on the platform for work, research, or daily productivity. As the popularity of generative AI applications continues to rise, even brief periods of unavailability can disrupt workflows and user expectations.
We will continue to monitor the situation and update as more information becomes available from OpenAI.
