Careem launches Box XL in Dubai for large-item deliveries

Careem has introduced Box XL in Dubai, a new delivery option designed for transporting larger items by car. The service builds on the company’s existing bike-based Careem Box offering, which launched in 2022 and has since become widely used for small and medium-sized deliveries.

Box XL is aimed at transporting items too large for a motorcycle courier, such as small appliances, monitors, or second-hand purchases from marketplaces like Dubizzle. According to Careem, demand for larger-item delivery has been increasing, with nearly 20% of past Box orders involving oversized packages.

The new option will expand to Abu Dhabi and Amman in the near future, with intercity delivery between select locations planned later this year. This could make it a viable alternative to hiring moving vans for single bulky items, providing a same-day service using Careem’s driver network.

Box XL operates alongside the existing Box Purchase feature, which allows a courier to buy items on behalf of the customer for orders up to AED 350. This is often used for retail goods, urgent gifts, or purchases from stores without delivery services.

Careem Box has built a large user base in Dubai, with over 900,000 customers since its launch. Some individuals use it extensively—one user made 1,380 bookings in 2024, while another arranged over 120 deliveries in a single day. Common deliveries include documents, electronics, and personal items, as well as restaurant meals from venues without delivery options.

Using Box XL is similar to the standard service: customers open the Careem app, select “Box” from the home screen, and choose the XL option for larger deliveries. Careem Plus subscribers can also access free deliveries and discounts across the platform’s other services, with the company claiming average monthly savings of around AED 300.
