Apple Music’s AutoMix takes on Spotify’s DJ—and it might actually be better

For years, Spotify has led the charge in personalized music discovery, with curated playlists like Discover Weekly and Daily Mixes that adapt to user taste over time. But at WWDC 2025, Apple quietly introduced a new feature for Apple Music that might shift the conversation—not by reinventing what we listen to, but by rethinking how we hear it.

Apple’s new AutoMix feature is a deeper take on the idea of seamless music playback. While Spotify and other services already offer crossfade options that ease the jarring transitions between songs, AutoMix goes further by incorporating beat matching and tempo-aware time-stretching. Built on the company’s broader Apple Intelligence framework, AutoMix essentially functions as a virtual DJ, blending tracks with musical awareness rather than just overlapping waveforms.

This isn’t just a gimmick for audiophiles. For casual listeners who queue up playlists for parties, workouts, or even daily routines, AutoMix offers a distinctly elevated experience—one that mirrors the flow of a live DJ set without requiring any manual effort. It’s especially appealing in social settings, where awkward silences or abrupt musical shifts can break the mood. With AutoMix, Apple is tapping into a subtle but powerful truth: that how we listen is just as important as what we listen to.

The update also comes alongside other incremental additions to Apple Music, such as lyric translation and pronunciation tools for global tracks, and the ability to pin favorite artists or albums to the top of the library. These features may seem minor on their own, but they reflect Apple’s continued effort to chip away at Spotify’s lead in the streaming space—not through radical overhauls, but by refining the listening experience and tightening its ecosystem integration.

As Apple leans further into contextual intelligence across its devices, AutoMix offers a glimpse of how AI can meaningfully enhance day-to-day use—without trying to replace human taste, just smooth it out.
