The Apple Hearing Study, in collaboration with the University of Michigan, has released preliminary findings from one of the largest surveys on tinnitus to date. The study, involving over 160,000 participants, sheds light on the prevalence, characteristics, causes, and management of this common hearing condition.
Key Findings:
- Prevalence: 77.6% of participants have experienced tinnitus, with daily occurrences increasing with age. Those aged 55 and older are three times more likely to experience daily tinnitus than those aged 18-34.
- Management: Common methods to alleviate tinnitus include using noise machines, listening to nature sounds, and practicing meditation.
- Causes: Noise trauma (exposure to loud noises) and stress were identified as the primary causes of tinnitus.
- Characteristics: The majority experience brief episodes, while 14.7% report constant tinnitus. The duration of tinnitus increases with age, with 35.8% of those 55 and older experiencing it constantly.
- Sound Characterization: Most participants described their tinnitus as a pure tone or white noise.

Implications:
This research provides valuable insights into tinnitus, a condition that affects millions worldwide. By understanding who is most affected, how tinnitus is experienced, and potential causes, researchers can develop more effective prevention and treatment strategies.
“The Apple Hearing Study gives us an unprecedented opportunity to improve our understanding of tinnitus across demographics, ultimately leading to better management of this condition,” said Rick Neitzel, a professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health.

Apple’s Commitment to Hearing Health:
Apple is committed to supporting hearing health through innovative features in its products. The Noise app on Apple Watch, for example, can notify users of potentially harmful noise levels. Additionally, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max offer features like Active Noise Cancellation and Loud Sound Reduction to protect hearing.
About the Apple Hearing Study:
The Apple Hearing Study is one of three landmark public health studies conducted within the Research app on iPhone. It aims to advance understanding of sound exposure and its impact on hearing health.
