A report from The Information has revealed that a year-long negotiation between Apple and OpenAI, culminating in a deal to integrate GPT technology into iOS 18, has raised alarms at Microsoft. The tech giant, also reliant on OpenAI for its Copilot software, fears the increased demand on servers and potential competition from Apple’s AI advancements.
The deal, expected to be unveiled at WWDC 2024, will empower Siri with OpenAI’s capabilities, enabling it to handle complex queries and potentially transform into a chatbot. However, Apple intends to clearly indicate when Siri’s responses are generated by ChatGPT.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has expressed concerns to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman regarding server capacity and the potential impact on their own AI initiatives. Despite this, Microsoft stands to benefit financially from the partnership due to its investment in OpenAI.
Apple has also explored a deal with Google to integrate Gemini into iOS 18, but the focus remains on leveraging OpenAI’s technology for Siri’s enhanced capabilities. The company is also developing its own language model for offline tasks.
The first look at these new AI features in iOS 18 is expected at Apple’s WWDC 2024 keynote on June 10th.
