Apple and Google have partnered to create a new tool that allows users to seamlessly transfer their Google Photos collections directly to iCloud Photos. This initiative, part of the Data Transfer Project, expands on the existing functionality that enabled transfers from iCloud Photos to Google Photos.
The tool, which will be available globally in over 240 countries and regions, is expected to roll out over the next week. However, it’s important to note that child accounts, Managed Apple IDs, and accounts with Advanced Data Protection enabled will not be able to utilize this service.
Apple assures users that their photos and videos will remain in Google Photos after the transfer, and the process occurs directly between Google and iCloud, eliminating the need for manual downloads. The transfer duration can range from hours to days, depending on the size of the collection.
To initiate the transfer, users can visit Google Takeout and follow the provided instructions, selecting “Apple – iCloud Photos” as the destination. Detailed information on the process is available on both Apple’s and Google’s websites.
