Acer updates Predator Helios Neo gaming laptops

Acer has refreshed its Predator Helios Neo lineup of gaming laptops with Intel’s latest Core Ultra 200HX Plus processors and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50-series GPUs, including configurations up to the RTX 5080 Laptop GPU. The update targets gamers seeking higher performance in three main models: the slim Helios Neo 16S AI, the standard Helios Neo 16 AI, and the larger Helios Neo 18 AI. These machines build on previous generations by pairing newer silicon with improved displays and cooling, though they follow a familiar pattern of incremental upgrades common in the competitive gaming laptop market.

The Core Ultra 200HX Plus series brings more cores and better efficiency compared to prior HX chips, supporting solid frame rates and multitasking in demanding titles. Paired with RTX 50-series GPUs based on the Blackwell architecture, the laptops benefit from enhanced ray tracing, DLSS upscaling, and additional AI acceleration. In practice, this translates to smoother gameplay at higher settings, though real-world gains will depend on configuration, power limits, and thermal headroom. Acer equips all models with vector heat pipes, liquid metal thermal grease, and AeroBlade 3D fans to manage heat, an area where previous Predator models sometimes ran warm under sustained loads.

The Helios Neo 16S AI stands out for portability, measuring under 19 mm thick while still offering up to an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and RTX 5080. It features a 16-inch WQXGA OLED display with 240 Hz refresh rate, 1 ms response time, and full DCI-P3 coverage, which should deliver sharp, vibrant visuals for fast-paced games. The 16 AI and 18 AI variants follow similar high-end specs but add more emphasis on connectivity and screen size. The 18-inch model includes an Ambient Contrast Ratio film to cut glare, useful for brighter rooms, while both include options like Intel Killer Ethernet and Thunderbolt 4.

Acer also highlights AI tools such as performance tuning via PredatorSense, noise reduction in voice chat, and gameplay aids like auto-capture and basic aiming assistance. These features are becoming standard across the industry but can vary in usefulness depending on implementation and user workflow. Battery life remains a typical concern for high-power gaming laptops; while the new processors promise better efficiency, extended unplugged sessions will likely still require compromises on settings.

In a market dominated by ASUS, MSI, and Lenovo, Acer’s Helios Neo series has carved a niche with competitive pricing and bold designs, though build quality and long-term reliability have drawn mixed feedback in past reviews. This refresh arrives months after the initial announcements in March 2026, as Intel and NVIDIA push new mobile platforms to maintain relevance against AMD’s strong Ryzen offerings. The inclusion of OLED panels on multiple models is a welcome step for visual quality, yet potential drawbacks like OLED burn-in risk and higher power draw warrant consideration for heavy users.

Overall, the updated Predator Helios Neo laptops deliver capable desktop-class performance in portable form factors without major surprises. They suit enthusiasts who prioritize raw power and high-refresh displays, but buyers should weigh them against alternatives that might offer better value, quieter operation, or stronger ecosystem integration. Availability and final pricing will determine their competitiveness in the crowded 2026 gaming laptop season.
