That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime S4E3 review: dungeon chaos and sinister shadow puppetry

TL;DR: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 4 Episode 3 brilliantly balances hilarious avatar training chaos in the evolving dungeon with the chilling introduction of Mariabell Rozzo as a greedy, shadow-pulling antagonist who’s been controlling Yuuki all along. It’s the turning point the season needed, setting up a high-stakes chess match between Rimuru’s utopia dream and the Rozzos’ domination plans.

WATCH ON CRUNCHYROLL

Man, I sat down with my oversized mug of coffee, ready for another chill slice-of-life episode in the Nation of Monsters, and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 4 Episode 3 just yanked the rug out from under me in the best way possible.

Here we are, deep into the isekai that turned a salaryman slime into one of the most beloved Demon Lords in anime history, and suddenly the training wheels are coming off. Rimuru and his overpowered crew are still building their peaceful monster-human utopia, but the real chess pieces are sliding into place behind the scenes. This episode, titled “The Avatar Team is Formed,” feels like the moment the show stops warming up and starts sprinting toward something much darker and more deliciously complicated.

I’ve been riding with Rimuru since the very first season, back when he was just a gooey little guy accidentally making friends with a dragon. Watching him evolve (literally and figuratively) into a nation-building mastermind has been pure geek joy. But Season 4 is starting to feel different. There’s an undercurrent of real stakes bubbling up, and Episode 3 finally starts peeling back the curtain on who might actually pose a threat to everything he’s built.

The New and Improved Dungeon Feels Like the Ultimate Isekai Theme Park

Let’s start with the fun part, because That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime has always nailed the wholesome monster-life vibes better than almost anyone else in the genre. Rimuru, along with his council including the eccentric architect Mjolmille, Demon Lord Ramiris, Milim Nava, and the ever-chaotic Storm Dragon Veldora, decide to overhaul their massive dungeon attraction after getting flooded with complaints about its brutal difficulty.

What they end up creating is basically the ultimate evolving video game dungeon come to life. Adventurers pour in from all corners, chasing glory and that sweet 100 stellar coin prize for clearing all 100 floors. Of course, our slime overlord and his team have stacked the deck so hard that actually winning feels about as likely as me beating a FromSoftware boss on my first try without summoning help.

The real highlight here is watching these god-tier beings struggle with something as mundane as operating avatar bodies. Rimuru, Lilim, and Veldora dive into remote-controlled monster forms to personally handle a rising threat from an adventurer party called Team Green Fury, who are steamrolling through the floors like it’s easy mode. The training sequences are pure comedic gold, full of slapstick fails and over-the-top reactions that remind you why this series still feels fresh even after all these episodes.

I couldn’t stop laughing at Veldora trying to play it cool while his avatar keeps glitching out. It’s the kind of lighthearted fanservice that makes you appreciate how far the show has come from its humble beginnings. Yet even in these silly moments, the episode smartly ties everything back to the bigger picture. The dungeon isn’t just a tourist trap anymore. It’s becoming a strategic hub, a testing ground, and unfortunately, a perfect vantage point for enemies to keep tabs on Tempest.

Finally Meeting the Real Big Bad – And She’s Absolutely Terrifying

Okay, buckle up, because this is where That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 4 Episode 3 stops playing around and drops some serious antagonist heat. We’ve been teased about the Rozzo family for a while now, those shadowy human supremacists pulling strings from the Kingdom of Seltrozzo. But Episode 3 gives us the full, unfiltered introduction to Mariabell Rozzo, and holy crap, she might be one of the most compelling villains the series has introduced yet.

Mariabell isn’t your typical mustache-twirling bad guy. She’s an Otherworlder, just like Rimuru, but her backstory hits different. In her previous life as a European noble, she spent decades orchestrating suffering from the shadows while living in luxury. Dying peacefully in old age, she gets reincarnated into this fantasy world with a Unique Skill called Greed that lets her literally weaponize people’s ambitions. The bigger their dreams, the easier they become her puppets.

The way the episode lets her narrate her own rise is masterful. We see her slowly taking control of her household, her servants, her peers, all while building toward something much larger. When she finally confronts her grandfather Granville, the patriarch of the Rozzos, there’s this electric tension as she explains why she hasn’t tried to dominate him yet. His ambition is massive, but so is his self-restraint. It’s a quiet, chilling moment that tells you everything you need to know about how dangerous this family really is.

What makes Mariabell such a perfect foil to Rimuru is the parallel Otherworlder energy. Both arrived in this world with memories and skills from their old lives, but while Rimuru used his second chance to build bridges and create a place where monsters and humans could coexist, Mariabell doubled down on control and domination. She sees the Rozzo family’s crusade against monsterkind as her golden ticket to another lifetime of pulling strings from the throne of shadows. It’s deliciously ironic and sets up some fascinating philosophical clashes down the line.

The Yuuki Revelation That Changes Everything

Just when you think the episode has shown its hand, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Season 4 Episode 3 hits you with the post-credit stinger equivalent during the main story. Yuuki Kagurazaka, the scheming Otherworlder who’s been playing 4D chess since Season 3, isn’t the mastermind we thought he was. He’s been under Mariabell’s complete control the entire time, his ambitions twisted and steered by her Greed skill.

This revelation lands like a gut punch, especially after Yuuki casually claims he could potentially defeat Rimuru depending on the conditions. For a second you’re thinking, “Wait, is this guy actually that strong?” Then the truth drops, and suddenly Mariabell feels exponentially more threatening. She’s been orchestrating major incidents through proxies, using Yuuki as her brilliant but unwitting front man.

The implications for the wider conflict are huge. The Rozzos have positioned themselves as humanity’s shield against the “monster threat,” expanding their influence across the west with eyes on total dominance. Mariabell’s plan isn’t just to crush Tempest. She wants to corrupt Rimuru’s dream of peaceful coexistence, staining that hard-won utopia with blood using the very greed she controls so masterfully.

There’s even a chilling line about giving Rimuru exactly what he wants, only to twist it into something monstrous. It’s the kind of long-game villainy that makes you excited (and a little nervous) for where this arc is heading.

How the A and B Stories Cleverly Intertwine

One of the smartest things about this episode is how it makes the seemingly disconnected dungeon shenanigans feed directly into the antagonist plot. Team Green Fury isn’t just some random power-leveling group. Through Yuuki’s influence at the Adventurer Guild, they’ve been serving as eyes and ears for the Rozzos, feeding intel straight back to Mariabell.

The avatars Rimuru and company are testing? They’re the perfect way to intervene without drawing too much attention. Everything clicks together in a way that feels organic rather than forced. The lighthearted training montages suddenly carry weight because they’re happening right under the nose of spies.

Even the post-credits scene adds another layer of suspense. We catch a glimpse of Duke Muese from the Kingdom of Ghastone, the guy who tried to sabotage Tempest during the Founding Festival with shady merchant tactics back in Season 3. He’s being tailed by Sō’ei, but before any interrogation can happen, an unknown assailant takes him out. It’s a quick, brutal reminder that the Rozzos don’t leave loose ends.

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime has always balanced its tones well, but Episode 3 does it with impressive confidence. The goofy dungeon antics never feel like filler because they’re actively advancing the espionage angle. The serious villain exposition never drags because it’s delivered through such a captivating character in Mariabell.

Why This Episode Feels Like a Turning Point for Season 4

After some of the slower, meeting-heavy stretches in previous seasons, this episode course-corrects in all the right ways. The exposition about the Rozzos and Mariabell’s backstory feels fresh and engaging instead of another roundtable discussion. The pacing has more urgency, the stakes feel sharper, and the character work on the antagonists actually makes you invested in the upcoming conflicts.

Rimuru’s growth continues to be the heart of the show. He’s not just getting stronger. He’s learning how to protect his ideals while navigating a world full of people who see his kindness as weakness to be exploited. Watching him geek out over dungeon mechanics while unknowingly being watched by a master manipulator creates this wonderful tension that keeps you hooked.

The animation and direction continue to shine, especially in the dungeon sequences where the evolving floors and boss fights get to flex a bit. Character designs remain top-tier, and the voice acting (both sub and dub, if you’re into that) sells the contrast between the playful Demon Lord squad and the ice-cold ambition of the Rozzos.

I also love how the show continues to play with power scaling in interesting ways. Yuuki’s offhand comment about potentially beating Rimuru opens up so many questions about how these Otherworlders stack up, especially when skills like Greed can bypass raw strength entirely. It’s the kind of tactical thinking that elevates That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime beyond simple “who would win” battles.
