Extend your iPhone’s battery life with the new Charge Limit feature

iOS 18 introduces a handy feature that can help prolong your iPhone’s battery life: Charge Limit. While iPhones have featured Optimized Battery Charging for a while now, this new option gives you more granular control over your battery’s charging habits.

How to Set a Charge Limit on Your iPhone

Before you proceed, ensure your iPhone is updated to iOS 18 and that you have an iPhone 15 or 16 model. Older iPhones do not support this feature.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Navigate to Battery > Charging.
  3. Adjust the Charge Limit slider to your desired percentage. You can set it as low as 80%.

Why Limit Your iPhone’s Battery Charge?

Lithium-ion batteries, like those found in iPhones, degrade over time. One factor that accelerates this degradation is consistently charging to 100% and then depleting to 0%. This deep charge cycle puts stress on the battery, reducing its overall lifespan.

By setting a charge limit, you can prevent your iPhone’s battery from reaching a full charge, minimizing stress and potentially extending its longevity. Apple’s Optimized Battery Charging already slows charging speeds after 80% to mitigate this issue, but the Charge Limit feature allows you to permanently cap the maximum charge level.

Is Charge Limit Right for You?

While Charge Limit can be beneficial for battery health, it’s essential to consider your usage patterns. If you’re a heavy iPhone user who frequently needs a full charge to get through the day, this feature might not be ideal. Constantly running out of battery can be inconvenient, and in those cases, replacing your iPhone’s battery after a couple of years might be a more practical solution.

However, if you’re a moderate user who is often near a power source, setting a charge limit can be a great way to preserve your battery’s health and extend its lifespan.
