Renault 5 Turbo 3E electric mini-supercar revealed

Renault has unveiled the production-ready exterior of its highly anticipated electric vehicle, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E, a modern interpretation of the classic Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2. The vehicle, showcased at a recent event near Paris, maintains the bold aesthetic of its concept, featuring a striking yellow and black livery reminiscent of the 1982 rally model.

The Renault 5 Turbo 3E is positioned as a high-performance electric hatchback, with design cues drawn from both its predecessors and the Renault 5 E-Tech electric, including shared rear lights and wing mirrors. However, the Turbo 3E distinguishes itself with a rear-wheel-drive configuration and a new platform that extends the wheelbase and widens the car’s stance, resulting in a compact vehicle with supercar-like proportions.

The vehicle utilizes rear in-wheel motors, delivering immediate torque to its 20-inch wheels. Renault claims this setup provides performance comparable to supercars, offering rapid acceleration and precise handling. The car boasts 540 horsepower, a top speed of 168 mph, and a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds, aided by a lightweight carbon fiber body. The 5 Turbo 3E supports DC fast charging up to 350 kW, enabling a 15 to 80 percent charge in approximately 15 minutes with a compatible charger.

While the exterior was revealed, the interior of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E remains under wraps. Renault has indicated that the interior will be highly customizable, featuring bucket seats, six-point harnesses, and a rally-style handbrake. Buyers will have the option to collaborate with Renault’s designers to personalize the interior, alongside a range of exterior color choices.

The Renault 5 Turbo 3E is slated for a 2027 launch, with pre-orders opening soon. Renault plans to produce 1,980 individually numbered units, a tribute to the original Turbo’s release year. The vehicle’s estimated starting price is around £130,000, with potential for significant increases based on customization options.

This electric vehicle represents Renault’s foray into the high-performance electric market, combining historical design elements with modern technology. The vehicle’s performance specifications and customizable features position it as a unique offering in the electric vehicle landscape.
