watchOS 27.2 second release candidate drops days before public rollout

Apple has pushed out a second release candidate for watchOS 27.2, a late revision that suggests the Apple Watch update needed a little more polish before it rolls out to everyone. The new build, 24S118, is now available to both developers and public beta testers, replacing the first RC build, 24S5101f, which landed only earlier this week.

A release candidate is meant to be the version Apple intends to ship, so a second one arriving days later is usually a sign that something surfaced during testing worth fixing. Apple hasn’t said what changed, and there’s no release note pointing to new features or specific fixes. The most likely explanation is a round of bug squashing, though that remains an assumption until anyone spots a meaningful difference.

The build numbers themselves offer a small clue. The first RC carried the kind of letter suffix Apple typically attaches to pre-release software, while the new 24S118 build looks much closer to the clean numbering usually seen on public releases. That pattern isn’t a guarantee, but it hints this is the version Apple expects to ship.

Timing matters here. Apple is preparing to roll out its broader 27.2 software wave next week, most likely early in the week, and watchOS 27.2 is expected to arrive alongside iOS 27.2, iPadOS 27.2 and tvOS 27.2. iOS 27.2 carries the bulk of the attention, with updates touching several built-in iPhone apps, while the Apple TV and iPad updates bring a handful of smaller additions. watchOS 27.2 appears to be the quietest of the group in terms of visible changes.

For Apple Watch owners, a delayed or revised build is arguably better news than a rushed one. Unlike an iPhone or Mac, an Apple Watch can’t easily be rolled back to an earlier version of its software by the user, so a problematic update can leave owners stuck until Apple issues a fix. That’s one reason many people avoid watchOS betas altogether, even if they happily test software on their other devices.

Anyone already on the beta track will receive the new RC as a standard over-the-air update through the Watch app on a paired iPhone. Everyone else should only need to wait a few more days for the final release.

The bigger question is whether Apple’s extra round of testing was about stability or something more specific, such as battery life or compatibility with the newest hardware. That answer should become clearer once the public release notes arrive next week.
