Sonos is launching the Ace Ultra headphones, Beam Ultra soundbar and Sonos 27 in a sweeping update that puts the company’s connected audio ecosystem back at the centre of its strategy. The hardware brings significant upgrades, but the bigger story is how Sonos wants headphones, speakers, home theater and software to behave as one adaptable system.
Ace Ultra directly addresses the most obvious weakness of the original Sonos Ace. While those headphones could exchange TV audio with compatible soundbars, they never became a proper part of a Sonos multiroom setup. Ace Ultra adds Wi-Fi connectivity to the wider ecosystem through Sonos Fabric, allowing music to move between speakers and headphones with a button press.
That feature, called Headphone Linking, arrives alongside new 40mm drivers, adaptive EQ, upgraded noise cancellation and 10 microphones. Sonos rates battery life at up to 35 hours, while USB-C and 3.5mm wired connections remain available. Headphone Linking will initially launch in early access on September 29.
Beam Ultra brings a more substantial acoustic redesign to Sonos’ compact soundbar range. The driver count increases from five to nine, including five tweeters and four low-profile woofers. Crucially, two of those tweeters fire upward, giving the Beam family physical height channels rather than depending entirely on processing to simulate overhead effects.
Sonos describes the resulting configuration as 7.1.2-channel Dolby Atmos. It won’t replace the precision of discrete ceiling speakers, but the addition of dedicated upward-firing drivers should make Beam Ultra a more convincing Atmos proposition than Beam Gen 2. Connectivity includes HDMI eARC, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Beam Ultra also introduces AI Speech Enhancement, which attempts to identify dialogue and keep voices intelligible when soundtracks become busy. Four enhancement levels can be selected through the Sonos app.
Sonos Fabric extends beyond the new hardware. Portable Surrounds lets compatible portable speakers temporarily become rear channels when moved into a home-theater setup. The speakers can detect their new position and change roles automatically, before returning to their usual jobs elsewhere in the home.
Then there’s Sonos 27, the newly named operating system underpinning the ecosystem. Sonos 27voice introduces optional conversational music and mood controls, while Sonos 27mcp uses Model Context Protocol to let external AI services such as ChatGPT interact with a Sonos system. Custom Agents are also planned, allowing users to configure different models, voices and automated roles.
Importantly, those AI features are opt-in. Sonos 27 will run through the S2 platform rather than the older S1 app, and Sonos acknowledges that not every S2 product will support every new capability because some features depend on newer hardware. Detailed per-device compatibility and upgrade information is still to come.
The app itself is also being refreshed with persistent Home, System and Search navigation, favorite-speaker pinning, presets, improved room sorting, iOS lock-screen controls, Shortcuts integration and upcoming system-health diagnostics.
Sonos is packing a lot into one launch, perhaps inevitably raising questions after its disastrous 2024 app overhaul. Ace Ultra and Beam Ultra look like meaningful hardware upgrades, but Sonos 27 carries the greater responsibility. If the company wants to position itself as an audio operating system rather than simply a speaker manufacturer, the software connecting everything needs to be the most dependable part of the experience.
