GPT-5.6 arrives with ChatGPT Work for practical AI assistance

OpenAI has begun the public rollout of GPT-5.6 following approval from the Trump administration, ending a brief period in which the model was available only to select government-approved organizations. Alongside the release, the company introduced ChatGPT Work, an AI agent designed to extend capabilities beyond conversation into practical workplace tasks for non-technical users.

The timing reflects ongoing regulatory scrutiny that has shaped recent AI deployments. After regulatory drama two weeks ago, the green light allows broader access, with OpenAI positioning the model suite—comprising Sol, Terra, and Luna—as a step forward in balancing power and efficiency. ChatGPT Work combines elements of ChatGPT with Codex-like functions, enabling users to pull context from chosen apps, files, and workflows to generate finished outputs such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and even basic web apps. A unified plugins directory supports connections to tools including Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, calendars, and customer relationship management systems.

Availability varies by platform. Mac and Windows users, including those on the free tier of ChatGPT, gain immediate access through the desktop application. On mobile and web interfaces, access begins with Pro, Enterprise, and Edu accounts, with Plus and Business users expected to receive it gradually over the coming days. The company described the rollout as starting globally and expanding toward full availability within 24 hours.

This move arrives amid an intensifying competition to develop useful AI agents for everyday consumers. Companies including Anthropic, Google, and Apple have pursued similar goals, with mixed outcomes. The recent emergence of open-source efforts like OpenClaw has added pressure, highlighting how theoretical promise often outpaces reliable performance in real-world settings. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work directly challenges offerings such as Anthropic’s Claude Cowork, betting that integration of context awareness and tool use will differentiate it.

Particular emphasis has been placed on Sol, described internally as the most capable variant, with strengths targeted at coding, cybersecurity, scientific applications, and general computer interaction. OpenAI also promotes it as a more affordable option compared to top-tier models from rivals, at a moment when industry-wide expenses continue to draw criticism for driving up costs passed along to users.

Yet questions linger about delivery. Previous generations of large language models have shown strong benchmark results while struggling with consistency, context retention over long sessions, and seamless integration into messy real-world workflows. The agent space, in particular, has a history of overpromising on autonomy—many early attempts still require significant human oversight to avoid errors or hallucinations. Whether GPT-5.6 and ChatGPT Work meaningfully advance the “right-hand” AI concept for average users remains to be seen through extended use, especially given persistent challenges around data privacy, security in enterprise environments, and the environmental footprint of training and running these systems.

Broader industry dynamics add context. The race to deploy ever-larger models has coincided with mounting concerns over energy consumption, potential job displacement in knowledge work, and the regulatory frameworks needed to manage rapid progress. OpenAI’s latest release navigates these tensions by combining public rollout with phased access, suggesting an awareness of both opportunity and risk.

In practice, the value will likely depend on how fluidly the system handles diverse tasks without constant correction. For now, it represents another incremental push in the effort to make advanced AI more accessible and productive, though tempered expectations may serve users better than unbridled optimism.
