Apple Watch marks Global Running Day with new award and tools

Apple continues its annual tradition of marking Global Running Day on June 3 with a limited-edition award available on Apple Watch. Users who complete a run of at least 5K using the Workout app or any compatible health-tracking application will earn the commemorative badge. The initiative serves as a gentle nudge for casual runners and more dedicated athletes alike, highlighting how wearable technology has become embedded in everyday fitness routines.

The Apple Watch range offers varying levels of capability for runners. The Apple Watch Ultra 3, starting at AED 3,199, provides the most robust option with strong GPS accuracy, extended battery life, and a customizable Action button useful for quick controls during activity. The Series 11, from AED 1,599, balances solid performance with a thinner, lighter design and up to 24 hours of typical use. At the entry point, the SE 3 begins at AED 999 and delivers core tracking functions with an Always-On display, though its 18-hour battery life may require more careful management for longer efforts.

Several features in the Workout app aim to support structured training. Custom Workouts allow users to build sessions with intervals, distance targets, and recovery periods, while integration with third-party platforms like TrainingPeaks and Runna adds flexibility. Runners can monitor metrics such as vertical oscillation, stride length, ground contact time, and power output. The Pacer tool helps maintain target speeds, and automatic track detection uses GPS and mapping data for more precise lap measurements on standard outdoor circuits. Race Route functionality lets users compete against their own past performances on familiar paths, providing real-time alerts on pace and deviations.

Training Load offers a useful overview by comparing recent workout intensity against a four-week baseline, helping athletes avoid overtraining. These tools build on years of incremental improvements in wearable sensors, though real-world accuracy still depends on proper fit, consistent GPS signals, and individual biomechanics. Heart rate zones and customizable views during runs deliver actionable feedback without overwhelming the experience.

Beyond running-specific tools, the Apple Watch includes broader health features relevant to recovery. Sleep tracking provides a score based on duration, consistency, and interruptions, while the Vitals app summarizes overnight data. Safety options like Emergency SOS and fall detection remain available, particularly valuable for those running alone or in remote areas. The Ultra 3 adds satellite connectivity for added reassurance.

Apple Fitness+ complements the hardware with guided running content, including beginner programs like Run Your First 5K, treadmill sessions with varied intensities, and audio-guided Time to Run experiences on notable routes. Yoga for runners and cooldown routines address mobility and recovery. The service costs AED 36.99 monthly or AED 149.99 annually, which may deter some users given the growing number of free or lower-cost alternatives available.

While Apple has refined its running ecosystem over time, many of these capabilities echo features already present in competitors from Garmin, Coros, and others. The real value often lies in seamless integration within the Apple environment rather than outright superiority. For those already invested in the ecosystem, the combination of hardware and software creates a capable companion for building running habits. Yet success ultimately depends on consistent user effort rather than any single device or award.

Full list of feature below:

  • Custom Workouts: You can use a combination of distance and time goals to set up a structured workout that includes intervals of work and recovery. You can also add new alerts to a specific part of your workout. Third parties such as TrainingPeaks, Vdot, and Runna can integrate into Custom Workouts too.
  • Workout Views: Customizable, accurate, actionable data that you can view during a workout or edit and add before starting your workout. Additional Workout Views are available to select from, including Activity Rings, Elevation, Segments, Splits, and Heart Rate Zones.
  • Heart Rate Zones: You can learn about the intensity level of your running workout by viewing Heart Rate Zone information on your Apple Watch.
  • Running Metrics including Vertical Oscillation, Stride Length, Ground Contact Time, Power.
  • Pacer: Choose a distance, then a target finish time, and this training experience provides the required pace you need to sustain to achieve it. During your run, the pace alerts will help you meet your goal.
  • Automatic track detection: Apple Watch detects when users arrive at any standard shaped outdoor track, and uses both Apple Maps data and GPS to provide the most accurate distance, pace, and route map.
  • Race Route: Routes that you repeat will be reflected in the Workout app for you to race against your last or best result. When you complete an outdoor run, your distance, time, and route data are securely saved to your iPhone using on-device processing to automatically group similar routes. You’ll receive alerts for being ahead or behind and alerts when you go off route.
  • Training Load: Training Load compares the intensity and duration of your workouts over the last 7 days to what you’ve done over the previous 28 days. It then classifies your current training load on a scale from well below to well above—to help you understand the relative strain on your body and decide whether it’s sustainable. In this way, you can make more informed decisions about how and when to adjust your workouts—especially when you’re training for a big event.
  • Automatic audio during workouts: You can set media to automatically play when you begin a workout type—either media selected for you by Apple Music based on the workout type and the music you love (Apple Music subscription required), or media you choose yourself.
  • Users can also benefit from third-party experiences like Nike Run Club; the updated Strava app that includes Live Segments; and custom workouts from apps like Runna and TrainingPeaks.

Health, safety, and connectivity features on Apple Watch

  • Apple Watch offers these running features in addition to a suite of advanced health, safety, and connectivity features you can use throughout the day and night — from sleep tracking, to heart health features, to staying connected with messages and phone calls, to safety features like Emergency SOS, fall detection, and satellite communications (on Apple Watch Ultra 3).
  • Sleep score and Vitals app: In the Sleep app, you can view a sleep score —a score based on estimates of how long you slept, the consistency of when you fell asleep relative to your recent history, and the amount and duration of awake periods during sleep. After your sleep is analyzed, you are given a score ranging from 0-100, with a classification and a detailed breakdown to help you understand how to make your sleep more restorative. With the Vitals app, you can also see your overnight vitals for additional insights.
