Instagram and Spotify are deepening their partnership with new features that make music sharing more fluid across both platforms. The update, rolling out now, allows Spotify’s nearly 700 million users to share snippets of songs directly in Instagram Stories and Notes, giving followers a way to sample music before deciding to open it in the Spotify app.
When posting a track to Instagram Stories, users will now see a short audio preview embedded within the post. Viewers can tap the music sticker to launch the full track in Spotify. This small addition addresses one of the long-standing drawbacks of music sharing on Instagram: previously, Stories only displayed album art and a link without sound.
Instagram is also expanding Notes, the lightweight status update feature introduced in 2022. Users can now broadcast what they’re currently listening to by tapping the music note icon when creating a note, then selecting “Share from Spotify.” The note will update dynamically—if no song is playing at the time, it will display the next track played within 30 minutes. Friends can tap on the note to instantly add the track to their own Spotify library.
The integration works both ways. From the Spotify app, users will see a new Instagram Notes icon alongside the familiar Stories sharing option, streamlining the process of posting music updates to social feeds.
The move reflects a growing push to make social music discovery more interactive. While TikTok has been a dominant force in turning songs viral, Instagram and Spotify are leveraging their combined reach to encourage smaller, more personal sharing moments—whether it’s adding a song to a Story for context or casually showing friends what’s on repeat.
How much this will shift user behavior remains to be seen. Stories are already crowded with interactive elements, and Notes has yet to reach the ubiquity of Instagram’s core features. Still, the ability to let followers instantly preview and save music could help Spotify tighten its grip as the default streaming platform for casual discovery.
