Adam Sandler’s comedic brilliance sometimes overshadows his dramatic depth, but he’s undoubtedly one of the most talented actors of his generation. “Spaceman” offers a stark departure from his usual fare. Directed by Johan Renck (“Chernobyl”), this adaptation of Jaroslav Kalfař’s novel fuses sci-fi with an introspective exploration of love and loss.
In Colby Day’s screenplay, Sandler’s Jakub journeys to Jupiter to study a mysterious phenomenon. Meanwhile, his marriage to Lenka (Carey Mulligan) unravels on Earth. The link between these threads is an unexpected visitor: Hanuš. This unsettling yet endearing giant spider, voiced perfectly by Paul Dano, studies Jakub’s memories for insight into humanity, dishing out relationship advice along the way.
While “Spaceman” has a melancholic tone, Hanuš injects much-needed humor. His fascination with Jakub (“skinny human!”) and chocolate is oddly charming. Dano’s soothing voice adds warmth to the character, making him the surprising emotional anchor of the film.
Jakub starts his journey self-absorbed, but Sandler’s nuanced performance reveals a vulnerable man wrestling with trauma. Hanuš forces Jakub to confront his past, leading to a poignant moment of connection – a testament to both the storytelling and Max Richter’s evocative score.
Though Lenka’s role could be stronger, Mulligan adds depth and determination to her character. “Spaceman” charts the couple’s troubled path, culminating in a bittersweet ending that feels authentically earned.
