The series is an adaptation of the first book in Hugh Howey’s trilogy of the same name. Silo is set in the future when earth has been devastated and people who managed to survive live in an underground multilevel, self-sustaining silo sealed off from the supposedly toxic outside world. The story kicks off some 100 years post the inception of the silo and the end of world.
The silo is a small city run by a mayor, a sheriff, and has everything from markets, to food kiosk, and jobs. The theme of the series is structured around “We do not know who built the silo” and “We do not know when it will be safe to go outside”, which are repeated during the episodes. The story also focuses on how the history of the silo was erased by a rebellion in the past. The series reveals multiple mysteries across its episodes, from the unclear history of the silo, to secrets of the outside world which no one dares explore, and the ban of relics of past times, which includes a Pez dispenser🤔
Ultimately, it all comes down to what’s going on outside. Residents inside can only see a live video feed through a giant screen inside the cafeteria, which shows a post-apocalyptic scene of dead trees and rocks. If any resident requests to go outside, the law dictates that they can not return back inside (portrayed as something equivalent to a death sentence).
Without diving into spoilers, and to make it as short as possible, the main plot starts the sheriff (David Oyelowo) and his wife, Allison (Rashida Jones), who have been given permission to attempt to get pregnant. When they failed, a chain of events is set in motion, which quickly shifts to a wide pool of mysteries and conspiracies, and puts Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) in the middle of it all.
Overall, the the series is very gripping, with strong script and A-grade acting. Even though at some point it may seem slow, it has what it takes to keep you hooked.
Should you stream it? A definite yes.
