Harry Potter HBO series gets new teaser before Christmas premiere

HBO has released the second official teaser for its new Harry Potter television adaptation, offering another look at the ambitious return to Hogwarts ahead of the series’ Christmas Day premiere.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will debut on December 25, 2026, with its first season running for eight episodes. For viewers in the Middle East, the series will stream exclusively on OSN+, giving the platform one of the year’s most recognisable entertainment properties during the holiday period.

The HBO series is going back to the beginning rather than extending the timeline established by Warner Bros.’ blockbuster film franchise. Season one adapts J.K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter novel, following an 11-year-old Harry as he discovers his magical heritage, arrives at Hogwarts and becomes friends with Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.

That familiar story also makes HBO’s adaptation an unusually difficult balancing act. The original films remain deeply embedded in popular culture, so the television series needs to justify revisiting material that millions of viewers already know. An eight-episode format should provide considerably more room for characters, Hogwarts life and details from the novel that a feature-length movie could not accommodate, but it will inevitably invite direct comparisons with the 2001 film.

The new generation of Hogwarts students is led by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. HBO has surrounded the young trio with an extensive adult cast, including John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

Warwick Davis returns to the Harry Potter universe as Professor Filius Flitwick, while other notable additions include Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell and Anton Lesser as wandmaker Garrick Ollivander.

Behind the camera, Francesca Gardiner serves as writer and executive producer, while Mark Mylod is executive producing and directing multiple episodes. J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts and longtime Harry Potter film producer David Heyman are also executive producers. The production is being made for HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television.

The second teaser arrives at a crucial point for the project. HBO does not simply need to recreate Hogwarts with a new cast; it needs to establish a version of the Wizarding World capable of sustaining a long-running television adaptation without feeling like an extended remake of the films.

With December 25 now locked in, audiences will not have much longer to decide whether this new Hogwarts can escape the enormous shadow cast by its cinematic predecessor.
