Stranger Things may have wrapped up its main story, but Netflix is wasting little time keeping Hawkins alive. Animated spin-off Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 will return for its second season on September 17, bringing another 10 episodes to the franchise less than five months after its debut.
The unusually short gap follows the first season’s April 23 release. While Netflix confirmed the second season after the show arrived, the rapid turnaround suggests work on the new episodes was likely already well underway before that announcement.
Tales from ’85 occupies a deliberately narrow corner of Stranger Things history. Set between seasons two and three of the original series, it returns to Eleven, Dustin, Will and the rest of the Hawkins group without extending the timeline beyond the live-action show’s ending.
Season two shifts the calendar toward Valentine’s Day, although romance appears unlikely to be the biggest problem facing the gang. Netflix says the story will involve ghostly apparitions and a swarm of mysterious creatures creating trouble around Hawkins, giving the animated series another opportunity to explore supernatural incidents that were never shown in the original series.
That placement remains both the spin-off’s biggest advantage and its most obvious limitation. Setting Tales from ’85 inside an established period allows Netflix to revisit a particularly recognisable version of Hawkins and its characters, but viewers already know where the major players eventually end up. The series therefore has to make its adventures interesting without significantly disrupting established Stranger Things continuity.
The first season did not completely convince audiences that another trip to Hawkins was necessary. It currently holds a 63% critics score and 52% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, according to the supplied material, reflecting a mixed reception. Some reviewers appreciated its attempt to capture the atmosphere of the earlier Stranger Things seasons, while others saw it as an unnecessary addition positioned between stories audiences had already watched.
Eric Robles and Jennifer Muro developed the first season, with Robles serving as showrunner. Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer executive produced the project. Production involved Netflix Animation Studios, Upside Down Pictures, 21 Laps Entertainment and Flying Bark Productions, the animation studio whose previous work includes contributions to Marvel’s What If…? and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The animated series now has a larger role to play in Netflix’s Stranger Things plans. The original live-action show concluded its 42-episode run on December 31, 2025, leaving spin-offs as the obvious route for keeping one of Netflix’s biggest properties active.
There had also been talk of a separate live-action spin-off as far back as 2023, but no formal announcement is included in the available information. For now, Tales from ’85 is the franchise’s immediate future — and its second season should reveal whether audiences want more stories hidden inside Stranger Things history, or whether Hawkins works better when the timeline actually moves forward.
