Peter Cullen, the voice actor whose commanding performance turned Optimus Prime into one of pop culture’s most recognisable heroes, has died at the age of 85.
Cullen died on August 26 at his Los Angeles home, according to his agent Kevin Motley. His family said he died peacefully with loved ones around him. No cause of death has been announced. He is survived by his four children, Angus, Claire, Pilar and Clay.
For generations of Transformers fans, Cullen was more than simply the performer behind the Autobot leader. His deep, measured delivery became fundamental to Optimus Prime’s identity, surviving dramatic changes in animation, filmmaking technology and the franchise itself over more than four decades.
Cullen first played Optimus Prime in the original Transformers animated television series in 1984. He returned for 1986’s The Transformers: The Movie and continued to voice the character across animated productions and video games. When Transformers was reinvented as a live-action blockbuster franchise in 2007 under director Michael Bay, Cullen returned to provide Prime’s voice.
That decision helped give the radically redesigned CGI character an important connection to the original series. Cullen went on to appear throughout the live-action era, including Revenge of the Fallen, Dark of the Moon, Age of Extinction, The Last Knight and Bumblebee. His most recent live-action performance as Optimus Prime came in 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
The performance itself had unusually personal origins. Cullen developed Optimus Prime partly from his older brother Larry, a US Marine and Vietnam War veteran. Before Cullen auditioned for the role, Larry encouraged him to avoid playing the character as an exaggerated superhero and instead approach him with a combination of strength and gentleness. That restraint became one of Prime’s defining characteristics.
While Transformers inevitably dominates Cullen’s legacy, his five-decade career stretched considerably further. He voiced the perpetually gloomy Eeyore in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and later Pooh productions, played Monterey Jack in Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers and voiced KARR in Knight Rider. His film work also included providing the Predator’s distinctive vocal effects in the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film and voicing King Kong for the 1976 remake.
Cullen received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023, recognition that arrived after decades of voice work across television, cinema, animation and games.
Optimus Prime has been redesigned, rebooted and reinterpreted repeatedly since 1984, but Cullen provided something remarkably consistent underneath all those versions. For millions who grew up hearing that unmistakable voice, separating the character from the man behind it may prove considerably harder than replacing a truck with another robot.
