Virtual Reality is all the hype with the HTC Vive pre orders going live recently amongst other things but Microsoft went above and beyond with their Augmented Reality device the Microsoft HoloLens. It’s been over a year since the HoloLens has been revealed and now its developer kits are finally going on sale to the tune of $3000.

The developer kits will start shipping after the 30th of March and isn’t intended for consumers; in fact only developers who have applied online will be getting an invitation to order one. Microsoft have also revealed some more details about the HoloLens in conjunction with the dev kit release.

First off,  hundreds of apps will also come with the developer kits of which the listed are only a few:

  • Skype – for video calling friends and family
  • HoloTour – which lets the wearer look at 360 degree images of world cities
  • HoloStudio – lets developers build 3D objects
  • RoboRaid – a first-person shooting game

A few more hardware details have also been revealed:

  • Automatic pupillary distance calibration
  • Holographic Resolution: 2.3M total light points
  • Holographic Density: >2.5k radiants (light points per radian)

The HoloLens will also feature four “environment understanding” cameras, a depth camera, and four microphones. The built-in cameras also enable you to record mixed reality captures (MRC) — HD pictures and video of the holograms in the world around you that you can share with others even when they don’t have a HoloLens.

You can apply for a developer edition here.
