Nope it’s not Windows 9, Microsoft has decided that the next versions is going to be 10, Windows 10.

Microsoft  has formally announced the new version of Windows, and called it Windows 10 to everyone’s surprise. Why you ask? Because Microsoft said this is “the best Windows yet” and it deserves a jump from Windows 8 to 10…..Ok, whatever, moving on.

Here are the highlights of Windows 10:

“One product family. One platform. One store.”

Windows 10 is designed to run on multi platforms and across all devices like desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets.

There will be one way to write a universal application, one store, one way for apps to be discovered purchased and updated across all of these devices. Said Terry Myerson, Microsoft Executive VP of Operating Systems.

 Start Menu is back!

Due to popular demand, Microsoft has brought back the Start Menu. The menu layout can now be customised with live tiles, apps that can be pinned and resized.  Search option on the start menu can now fetch web results.

Multiple desktops / Multitasking

Windows 10 will allow users to work with multiple desktops. Users can grab apps from multiple desktops and move them around.
This feature can be switched on by using  a new ‘task view’ button which allows users to launch new virtual desktops and navigate between them.
User will be also able to snap apps next to each other and work on multiple windows at once with “Snap Assist”.
Better Touch/Keyboard And Mouse Integration

After being hit with a lot of critisim about tiles and touch screen integration in Windows 8, Microsoft has changed the way things are handled on Windows 10 and updated the input methods with what they called ‘Continuum’. Continuum will be able to automatically detect and switch between  touchscreen and mouse / keyboard modes depending on how users interact with their device.

We’re trying to be thoughtful about a UI that goes across all devices,” explained Joe Belfiore, Corporate Vice President of the Operating Systems Group at Microsoft.

Availability

Windows 10 will officially launch ‘later in 2015’ with a chance to try it out before by joining the  Windows Insider program which will give users a chance to download the technical preview (Beta).
