Google said it has named John Krafcik as chief executive of its self-driving car project. John Krafcik is the former head of Hyundai’s American operation.

The new CEO of the self-driving car project will join Google this month with the current head, Chris Urmson, staying as a technical leader.

John’s combination of technical expertise and auto industry experience will be particularly valuable as we collaborate with many different partners to achieve our goal of transforming mobility for millions of people, Google said in a statement. This is about getting ourselves ready for the future, so we can bring this technology to its full potential.

Google is aiming to have a driverless car system that can be used by car manufacturers ready within five years. The project, is part of “X lab,” Google’s experiments division.
