It’s only been a few short days since GoPro unveiled their Karma drone and we’ve already gotten another hot new drone on the market. Drone maker DJI unveiled the Mavic Pro, a drone that includes a stabilized 4K camera and a visual navigation system to track objects on video and avoid obstacles. The best part? It’s all in a foldable design that’s small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.
4.3 miles is the top range of the Mavic Pro but it can only stay airborne for up to 27 minutes on a single charge. That’s still impressive considering its size. It features a new FlightAutonomy system that combines five cameras, GPS and GLONASS satellite navigation, and two ultrasonic range finders to safely navigate routes in the sky at speeds of up to 40 mph. As a result, the DJI Mavic Pro can follow you around, or anything for that matter, even without a tracker. You can set up a home point, letting it return to its launch position by itself, landing exactly where it took off with a touch of a button.
But if you’re a more hands-on person (which drone enthusiast isn’t) you can control the Mavic Pro with the optional long-range handheld controller or just your smartphone within a shorter range, thanks to the Mavic Pro’s dual-band Wi-Fi.
The onboard camera is capable of shooting 4K video at 30fps and 1080p video at up to 96fps, as well as 12-megapixel still photos in RAW format. Furthermore, DJI says the drone can take a 2-second-long exposure with the new stabilization gimbal. All of this can be exported to DJI’s Go video editing software. Furthermore, you can even stream directly to Facebook!
The Mavic Pro, which will start shipping next month, is available to order now for $749 without the controller; whilst adding the controller will cost up to $999.
