The Dubai Economy Department (DED) has shut down 202 Instagram and social network accounts in addition to 218 websites this year for selling fake goods.
We have received many complaints and reports about the promotion of counterfeit products through social networks..we have checked those accounts before we decided to shut them, said Ibrahim Bahzad, head of the intellectual property protection division at DED. We found that such accounts are followed by over two million people.
Earlier this year, an ‘Electronic Protection Unit’ was established under the Commercial Compliance and Consumer Protection Division of the DED to monitor the web for sites and accounts promoting counterfeit products.
The DED also urged the public to report accounts selling or promoting fake goods over any social media platform by calling the hotline on 600545555 or get in touch with on twitter.
