Apple has officially released tvOS 27, bringing a relatively focused set of upgrades to compatible Apple TV devices, including high-resolution lossless Apple Music playback, a redesigned Podcasts app and expanded accessibility controls.
Unlike Apple’s more substantial iOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate and watchOS 27 releases, the latest Apple TV software isn’t trying to reinvent the platform. Instead, tvOS 27 concentrates on improving media consumption, with its most interesting addition aimed squarely at listeners with higher-end audio equipment.
Apple Music subscribers can now access high-resolution lossless playback through supported hardware. That’s a notable addition for Apple TV owners who use the streaming box as the centre of a home entertainment system, particularly when it’s connected to an AV receiver or compatible audio setup capable of taking advantage of higher-quality music.
Lossless audio itself isn’t new to Apple Music, but bringing expanded high-resolution support to Apple TV makes considerably more sense than it might initially appear. The device already spends much of its life connected to televisions, soundbars and dedicated home theatre equipment, giving it a natural role as a living-room music source rather than simply a video streamer.
The Podcasts app has also been redesigned in tvOS 27. Apple hasn’t detailed a dramatic change in how podcasts work on the platform, but the refreshed interface should bring the television experience more closely in line with the broader design changes appearing across Apple’s latest operating systems.
Accessibility gets attention as well. Apple has expanded its text-size options so larger text can be used across more areas of the Apple TV interface. It’s not the kind of feature that will dominate Apple’s software marketing, but for users who struggle to read smaller interface elements from across a room, it could be one of tvOS 27’s most practical improvements.
Installing the update should require little effort for most owners. Apple TV devices are normally configured to download and install tvOS updates automatically. Anyone wanting to check immediately can head to Settings, open System, select Software Updates and choose Update Software.
The relatively modest scope of tvOS 27 also reflects where Apple TV currently sits in Apple’s ecosystem. While the iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch are becoming major showcases for Apple’s expanding AI strategy, the television remains primarily a content and smart-home device.
That isn’t necessarily a weakness. Apple TV has long benefited from being one of Apple’s simpler products, and tvOS doesn’t need an endless collection of AI features to justify an annual update. Better audio, a cleaner Podcasts experience and improved readability aren’t revolutionary changes, but they’re sensible improvements to a platform that works best when it stays out of the way.
