Spotify free users can now play any song on demand

potify is loosening one of the most frustrating restrictions for free users. Starting today, listeners on the free tier can finally play any track on demand, instead of being forced to shuffle through albums or playlists.

Previously, this feature was locked behind a Premium subscription. Free users could only shuffle-play and had limited skips, often making it difficult to reach a specific song. With the change, non-paying users can now search for a song, select it directly in an album or playlist, or tap it from a shared link and hear it immediately.

The update is rolling out globally and applies to all free accounts. However, the rest of the free plan’s restrictions remain in place. That means listeners will still have to deal with ads between songs and limited skips. Spotify hasn’t indicated whether more features will be relaxed in the future, but the timing is notable—coming less than a week after the company finally introduced lossless audio for Premium subscribers.

The free tier still includes personalized recommendations, AI playlist covers, and daylists, but the ability to play any track on demand marks one of the most significant changes to Spotify’s free experience since launch. The move could help the platform attract more users while still pushing its ad-supported model.
