Qualcomm has officially announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite, its latest flagship chipset designed to power the next generation of high-end Android smartphones. This new chip boasts a unified naming scheme with Qualcomm’s ARM-based X Elite laptop chips and brings a host of impressive upgrades.

Oryon CPU and Enhanced Performance

The Snapdragon 8 Elite features an Oryon CPU with a custom eight-core architecture, comprising two prime cores clocked at 4.32 GHz and six performance cores running at up to 3.53 GHz. This is complemented by an industry-leading 24MB L2 cache and support for 5,300MHz LPDDR5X RAM.

Built on TSMC’s 3nm process, the Snapdragon 8 Elite promises a substantial 45% boost in CPU performance and 44% improvement in power efficiency compared to its predecessor.

Revamped Adreno GPU

Qualcomm has also revamped its Adreno GPU, delivering a 40% increase in performance and power savings along with enhanced ray-tracing capabilities. The Snapdragon 8 Elite is the first mobile SoC to support Unreal Engine 5.3 and the Nanite virtualized geometry system, paving the way for more immersive and graphically demanding mobile games.

AI and Connectivity Upgrades

The new Hexagon neural processing unit (NPU) enables AI tasks to run 45% faster with improved performance per watt. Qualcomm’s AI Engine with multimodal Gen AI support allows for the execution of large and small multimodal models.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite features the Snapdragon X80 5G modem, the first 5G modem with 6x downlink carrier aggregation and AI-based mmWave range extension. It supports peak download speeds of up to 10 Gbps and a theoretical maximum upload speed of 3.5 Gbps. The integrated FastConnect 7900 Mobile Connectivity System combines Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, and Ultra Wideband connectivity in a single 6nm chip.

Enhanced Image Processing

The enhanced image signal processor (ISP) is more deeply integrated with the Hexagon NPU, resulting in improved HDR, more natural skin tones and sky colors, and enhanced autofocus performance. Qualcomm has also added chip-level photo and video semantic segmentation and video object eraser functionality.

Availability

The Snapdragon 8 Elite is set to power upcoming flagship smartphones from leading Android manufacturers including Asus, Honor, iQOO, OnePlus, Oppo, Realme, Samsung, Vivo, Xiaomi, and others.
