Perplexity is pushing its AI agents off the cloud and onto users’ own hardware with Portable Computer, a new local-first system designed to handle tasks without constantly sending data to remote servers or consuming cloud-model tokens.
Developed in partnership with NVIDIA, Portable Computer runs the agent, AI models and supporting tools directly on compatible hardware. The immediate appeal is privacy: information processed locally can remain on the user’s machine rather than being uploaded to a cloud service. That could make the system particularly interesting for businesses and professionals dealing with sensitive documents or internal data.
There is also a potentially significant cost angle. Perplexity says tasks completed entirely on-device will not incur token costs. For users running agents repeatedly or processing large volumes of information, shifting routine workloads to local hardware could reduce dependence on usage-based cloud AI services.
There is, however, a substantial hardware requirement at launch. Portable Computer currently supports NVIDIA DGX Spark, the company’s compact AI system aimed at developers and researchers. That puts the initial implementation firmly in enthusiast and professional territory rather than making it something most laptop owners can immediately install and use.
The system can currently run Qwen 3.8 and PPLX 27B, Perplexity’s post-trained version of Qwen 3.8. Support for NVIDIA’s Nemotron 3.5 Lightning model and NVIDIA RTX GPUs is planned, which could eventually make Portable Computer accessible to a much broader pool of users with powerful desktop PCs and workstations.
Running locally does not mean Portable Computer is completely disconnected from cloud AI. The agent can still use services such as web search or more computationally demanding models when a task requires capabilities unavailable locally. Perplexity says users will be asked for permission before the system makes that transition, giving them control over when information leaves their machine.
The launch follows Perplexity’s Personal Computer agent and reflects a wider shift in generative AI. After several years dominated by increasingly large cloud models, companies are putting more emphasis on smaller models capable of running efficiently on consumer and workstation hardware. Better local models offer lower latency, improved privacy and potentially predictable operating costs, although their capabilities can still fall short of the largest cloud systems.
Portable Computer is available to Perplexity Pro and Max subscribers with DGX Spark hardware. Its broader significance will depend on how quickly RTX support arrives and how well smaller models perform when asked to handle genuinely complicated autonomous workloads. Local AI agents are an attractive idea, but for now, Perplexity’s version requires considerably more hardware than the average PC sitting under a desk.
