Apple’s first foldable iPhone hasn’t shipped yet, but Sonos has already updated its app for it. Sonos 27.2 is now rolling out and includes version 90.1 of the Sonos iOS app, which adds support for the iPhone Duo whether the phone is folded or opened up. The update is live on the App Store and can be installed manually now, so it will be ready before the Duo goes on sale later this month.
It’s a small update, but the timing is worth noting. Any new screen shape exposes apps that weren’t designed for it. Android foldables have dealt with this for years: apps that stretch awkwardly, sit in letterboxed windows or reset when the phone is opened. Apple’s developer tools for adaptive layouts should make the move easier on iOS. Even so, a phone that switches between a compact screen and a much larger one makes developers test layouts they’ve never had to think about on an iPhone. Sonos is one of the first big third-party brands to say it’s ready.
Sonos hasn’t given a detailed changelog for the Duo-specific changes, so it’s unclear whether the unfolded view does more than resize the existing interface. A larger screen would suit a multi-room audio app. In principle, it could show room groups, queues and playback controls together instead of across separate screens. Whether Sonos has actually done this will be clear once owners start using it.
The update also says something about where Sonos is now. In 2024 the company released a rebuilt app that removed features and frustrated customers, and the backlash damaged its reputation and contributed to leadership changes. Since then, Sonos has been trying to win back trust by updating its software steadily. Sonos 27, released in September, brought another redesign along with new features for its speakers, and this quick point release adds support for Apple’s newest hardware even before it launches.
For iPhone Duo buyers, it’s a good sign that big apps won’t just be stretched iPhone layouts. For the rest of the industry, it’s a reminder of how far ahead developers have to plan. The Duo will get plenty of attention for its hinge and folding display, but how useful it turns out to be will depend a lot on whether other app makers move as quickly as Sonos.
