OPPO is putting photography, design and battery life at the centre of its latest Reno generation, with the Reno16 Series now available in the UAE following its regional launch. The company marked the release with a Dubai hands-on event for media and creators, but beyond the matcha workshops and customised accessories, the more interesting story is how OPPO is positioning Reno in an increasingly crowded upper-midrange smartphone market.
The Reno16 family consists of the Reno16 Pro 5G, Reno16 5G and Reno16F 5G, with UAE prices starting at AED 1,799. Across the range, OPPO is leaning heavily into mobile photography and content creation, including a 50MP ultra-wide selfie camera, up to a 200MP main camera and 4K video recording.
AI inevitably plays a role. OPPO has added photography features including Pop Cam and AI Remix Collage alongside tools built into ColorOS 16. These additions reflect the wider smartphone industry’s shift towards computational photography and generative editing, where manufacturers increasingly need software features to differentiate devices that otherwise offer broadly similar camera hardware.
Design is another part of that pitch. The Pop White version uses what OPPO calls HoloVerse 3D Technology as part of its 3D Pop Planet Design, creating a layered visual effect that changes with surrounding light. Other UAE colour options include Starlight Black, Twilight Violet and Dream Purple. Whether that aesthetic has lasting appeal will be subjective, but it gives the Reno16 family a more recognisable identity than another collection of restrained black and silver slabs.
Battery capacity could prove more practical. Models in the series offer batteries of up to 7,000mAh alongside 80W SUPERVOOC fast charging, while IP68 and IP69 ratings provide additional protection against water and dust. Large batteries have become an increasingly important battleground among Android manufacturers, particularly as higher-density battery technologies make greater capacities possible without necessarily producing dramatically thicker phones.
OPPO is also extending the Reno16 launch beyond the handset itself. The new OPPO Bubble costs AED 499 and weighs 35 grams. The magnetic accessory uses an AMOLED display as a rear-camera viewfinder and can function as a remote shutter and custom display. The Enco Clip2 earphones, meanwhile, are priced at AED 649 and come in Luminous Gold or Slate Grey.
In the UAE, the Reno16 Pro 5G costs AED 3,299, while the Reno16 5G is AED 2,499. The Reno16F 5G costs AED 2,099 with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, or AED 1,799 for the 8GB/256GB configuration.
OPPO is supporting the launch with bundled accessories and extended warranties for purchases made from August 7, while an eligible-device trade-in promotion offers an additional bonus of up to AED 200 until August 16. Buyers also receive three months of Google AI Pro membership, including 5TB of cloud storage and access to Gemini Pro.
The Reno16 Series arrives at a point when impressive camera specifications and AI labels alone are no longer unusual. Its bigger test will be whether the combination of battery endurance, imaging tools and distinctive hardware can make Reno stand out once the launch promotions disappear.
