OpenAI extends Deep Research capabilities with new lightweight tool for free users

OpenAI is expanding the reach of its AI-powered research assistant with the launch of a lightweight version of its Deep Research tool, now accessible to free-tier users of ChatGPT. Originally developed for intensive, multi-step investigations across vast web content, Deep Research was previously limited to premium subscription tiers. This latest move signals OpenAI’s intent to democratize access to advanced research capabilities by offering a trimmed-down, resource-efficient variant that retains core functionality while scaling back some of the processing depth.

Deep Research, introduced earlier this year, functions as an autonomous digital research agent. It’s designed to handle complex queries by crawling the web, synthesizing findings, and generating structured responses, often complete with citations. The original tool leverages the o3 model—an iteration optimized for web navigation and analytical reasoning. It is capable of interpreting nuanced instructions and compiling comprehensive reports, though often at the cost of speed and computational demand.

The newly introduced lightweight version uses a separate architecture—the o4-mini model—which prioritizes speed and cost efficiency over exhaustive depth. According to OpenAI, the shift to this smaller engine allows for a broader rollout and higher usage quotas, particularly important for non-paying users who previously lacked access to this type of tool. While the output is generally shorter and less detailed, the company asserts that the quality remains sufficient for most common research tasks.

ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro subscribers will see the lightweight version added to their existing research task limits, allowing more flexibility in how they allocate their usage. Meanwhile, free users now have immediate access to the scaled-back version, a notable shift in OpenAI’s approach to accessibility. Enterprise and education tiers are expected to receive access shortly, aligning with the same usage terms as Team plans.

This move suggests OpenAI is continuing to blur the line between casual use and professional-grade capabilities. By lowering the barrier to entry, the company positions its research tools not just for academic or business users, but for a wider audience interested in AI-assisted web exploration. Whether this lighter version will meet the expectations of power users remains to be seen, but for many, it represents a meaningful step toward making high-quality, AI-driven research more accessible and less reliant on premium subscriptions.
