NVIDIA Shield TV receives update with fixes and enhancements

The NVIDIA Shield TV, a popular media streaming device, has received a new software update, bringing a welcome set of fixes and improvements. This update, version 33.2.0.252, is particularly noteworthy as it comes after a year of quiet on the software front.

The update focuses primarily on resolving issues and enhancing existing features. A key highlight is the enhancement to the Match Frame Rate feature, which aims to provide smoother video playback by synchronizing the display refresh rate with the content’s frame rate.

Key Fixes and Improvements

  • Enhanced Match Frame Rate (beta)
  • Resolved issue with Shield drive filling up
  • Fixed audio issues when a headset is connected to the controller with Dolby Audio Processing enabled
  • Addressed GeForce Now crash after launch
  • Ability to clear HDMI 1.4 flag via factory reset
  • Fixed video distortion on “RGB 8-bit Rec.709” display mode
  • Resolved USB drive corruption issues after hot-plugging
  • Corrected NAS folder information display
  • Fixed issue with mounted storage not being listed after upgrade
  • Addressed occasional crashes in DRM-protected apps

Continued Support, Uncertain Future

Despite the lack of major Android OS updates, NVIDIA’s continued support for the Shield TV is commendable. However, the device remains on Android 11, which may lead to compatibility issues with apps in the future as developers shift their focus to newer Android versions.

It remains to be seen whether NVIDIA plans to release new Shield TV models or continue supporting the current lineup with software updates. Users will undoubtedly appreciate the continued attention to the platform, but a hardware refresh would certainly be welcomed by those seeking the latest features and capabilities.
