New WhatsApp audio feature brings real-time voice chats to any group

WhatsApp is broadening the reach of its voice chat functionality, rolling out support for “audio hangouts” in group chats of any size. The update allows users to initiate drop-in audio sessions across the full spectrum of WhatsApp’s group sizes, which can include up to 1,024 participants.

Unlike traditional voice calls on the app, which alert all participants with a ringing prompt, audio hangouts operate more subtly. Members can join or leave the voice chat freely, without disrupting others, making the experience more in line with platforms like Discord or Slack where real-time conversation is more ambient than interruptive.

The feature also keeps the app’s interface non-intrusive. While participating in an audio hangout, users can continue browsing messages and receive notifications as normal. This ensures the voice chat doesn’t take over the screen, enabling more seamless multitasking—a practical touch for users coordinating plans, chatting during events, or casually checking in with friends or colleagues.

Originally introduced in 2023, the feature was initially restricted to larger groups, with limits ranging between 32 and 256 members. That cap has now been removed, making audio hangouts available to smaller, more typical group threads as well. While WhatsApp’s upper group limit of 1,024 users might sound excessive for voice communication, the option is now there for those bold enough to test it.

The move continues WhatsApp’s steady shift toward more real-time, flexible forms of communication, bringing it closer to other community-centric platforms without straying too far from its core identity as a secure messaging app. For users looking for spontaneous group conversations without the pressure of a full-on call, the expanded audio hangouts feature offers a lightweight, low-commitment alternative.
