Despite privacy concerns, Microsoft’s Windows Recall feature is set to launch this fall as a preview release for Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs, according to an updated blog post from the company.
Starting in October, Windows Insiders will be the first to get their hands on Recall, providing valuable insights before a wider rollout to mainstream Windows update for Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft emphasizes its commitment to security, stating,”Security continues to be our top priority and when Recall is available for Windows Insiders in October we will publish a blog with more details.”
Recall has faced significant backlash due to its ability to capture everything users do on their PCs, including screenshots of their activity. While Microsoft positions Recall as a productivity tool, privacy advocates have labeled it as potential spyware, raising concerns about surveillance and hacking risks.
The criticism led Microsoft to delay Recall’s initial launch for its Copilot+ laptops in June. At the time, the company indicated a preview release for Windows Insiders would come first. However, subsequent silence from Microsoft had fueled speculation about Recall’s potential demise.
It’s now clear that Microsoft remains committed to Recall, although it will be an opt-in feature. In June, the company promised to encrypt all data saved by Recall and restrict access to the PC’s owner.
While the timeline for a broader release remains uncertain, the October beta release signals Microsoft’s intent to move forward with Recall, albeit cautiously. The company is likely hoping the beta testing phase will address some of the privacy concerns and pave the way for a smoother wider rollout.
