Microsoft 365 Copilot just gained a powerful new market intelligence agent

Euromonitor International is bringing its Passport market research platform directly into Microsoft 365 Copilot, giving organisations a way to query proprietary market intelligence without jumping between Copilot and a separate research service.

The new Euromonitor Passport agent is the company’s first agent-based integration with a third-party AI platform. Available through Microsoft 365 Copilot, it lets users ask questions in natural language and receive answers based on information retrieved from Euromonitor’s Passport database.

Underneath the integration is Model Context Protocol, or MCP, an increasingly important standard for connecting AI systems with external tools and data sources. In this case, MCP provides the bridge between Copilot and Passport, allowing the AI assistant to retrieve relevant market research when responding to a user’s request.

That approach addresses one of the more persistent problems with using generative AI for business research: knowing where an answer actually came from. Large language models can produce convincing responses that contain inaccurate or fabricated information, making unsourced AI particularly problematic when decisions involve market sizing, competitors or investment.

Euromonitor says responses generated through its Passport agent include traceable citations back to its proprietary database. That does not make an AI-generated interpretation automatically correct, but providing sources gives users something concrete to verify before relying on the output.

Passport covers research spanning industries, companies, consumers and economies, meaning the integration could be useful for tasks such as assessing categories, investigating potential markets and supporting growth strategies. Rather than manually searching Passport and transferring findings into another application, users can make those queries from their existing Copilot environment.

The broader significance is less about adding another chatbot and more about where enterprise AI is heading. General-purpose assistants are increasingly becoming interfaces to specialised corporate and commercial information. Connecting them to controlled data sources can make them more useful for professional work while reducing reliance on whatever information happens to exist in a model’s training data.

Microsoft has been pushing Copilot in this direction through extensibility, allowing organisations and third parties to connect specialised services and knowledge to the Microsoft 365 environment. For research providers such as Euromonitor, that also changes how customers encounter their products: the underlying database can become part of an AI-assisted workflow rather than a destination users must visit separately.

There are limitations to the accessibility of the new integration. The Passport agent requires users to hold licences for both Microsoft 365 Copilot and Euromonitor Passport, so this is aimed squarely at existing enterprise customers rather than general Copilot users.

The more interesting test will be whether access through natural-language prompts genuinely makes specialist market research faster without stripping away the context and scrutiny that serious business analysis requires. AI can shorten the journey to the data, but organisations still have to decide what that data actually means.
