Meta to discontinue Workplace, prioritizing AI and Metaverse development

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has announced the closure of Workplace, its enterprise communication platform, in 2026. This decision marks the end of a decade-long effort to establish a significant presence in the enterprise communication market.

Workplace, initially conceived as a way to leverage Facebook’s internal communication tools for business users, garnered some notable clients but ultimately struggled to compete with established players like Slack and Microsoft Teams. While the platform saw some success, its growth slowed after the pandemic, prompting Meta to reassess its priorities.

Meta’s decision to discontinue Workplace reflects a strategic shift towards focusing on AI and metaverse technologies, which the company believes will revolutionize the way we work. This move also aligns with Meta’s broader strategy of streamlining its offerings and concentrating on core projects.

Workplace users will have until August 31, 2025, to continue using the platform as usual. After that, it will transition to a read-only mode until May 31, 2026, when access will be terminated and all data will be deleted. Meta will be discounting Workplace by 50% starting September 1, 2024, to facilitate the transition.

Meta is recommending Zoom-owned Workvivo as its preferred migration partner and will be working with Zoom to provide additional tools and services to support customers in transitioning to the new platform.

This closure signifies a significant turning point for Meta as it refocuses its efforts on emerging technologies and prioritizes long-term innovation in the AI and metaverse space. The company’s decision to partner with Zoom’s Workvivo demonstrates its commitment to ensuring a smooth transition for its Workplace customers.
