The James Dyson Award has announced its 2024 global winners, recognizing two groundbreaking inventions that address critical issues in medicine and sustainability.

Athena: Revolutionizing Hair Loss Prevention for Chemotherapy Patients

Designed by Irish product designer Olivia Humphreys, Athena is a portable and affordable scalp cooling device that aims to prevent hair loss in chemotherapy patients. Inspired by her mother’s experience with cancer, Humphreys sought to create a more accessible and user-friendly alternative to existing scalp cooling technologies, which are often expensive and require patients to remain tethered to hospital equipment.

Ireland National Winner of the James Dyson Award 2024 announced today Irish National Winner of the James Dyson Award 2024, Athena, is a portable and accessible scalp-cooling device for patients getting chemotherapy at risk of hair loss. Product Design and Technology graduate Olivia Humphreys with her invention “Athena”, has scooped the top prize in Ireland, winning €5800 from the James Dyson Foundation.

Athena utilizes thermoelectric cooling technology, allowing patients to initiate and manage the cooling process from anywhere, including their homes. This portability offers greater flexibility and reduces the time patients spend in hospital settings. The device is also significantly more affordable than current models, potentially making hair loss prevention a viable option for a wider range of patients.

airXeed Radiosonde: A Sustainable Solution for Weather Forecasting

The Sustainability Award went to airXeed Radiosonde, a reusable weather balloon sensor developed by postdoctoral researchers Shane Kyi Hla Win and Danial Sufiyan Bin Shaiful from Singapore. Inspired by the autorotation of maple seeds, airXeed addresses the environmental impact of traditional single-use radiosondes, which contribute to plastic and electronic waste.

airXeed’s innovative design enables a controlled descent, allowing it to collect more atmospheric data and land safely in designated collection zones for reuse. This not only reduces waste but also improves the accuracy and efficiency of weather forecasting.

Celebrating Problem-Solving Innovation

The James Dyson Award celebrates the ingenuity of young engineers and scientists who are developing solutions to real-world problems. These two winning inventions showcase the potential of design and technology to improve lives and promote sustainability. With the support of the award, both Athena and airXeed are poised to make a significant impact in their respective fields.
