iPhone 16 series sees strong early sales in China, Counterpoint reports

Apple’s latest iPhone models have enjoyed a strong initial reception in China, with sales of the iPhone 16 series climbing 20% in the first three weeks following their launch compared to the 2023 models, according to Counterpoint Research.

This positive start comes amidst a fiercely competitive Chinese smartphone market, where Apple has faced increasing pressure from domestic rivals like Huawei. Both companies released their latest flagship phones on September 20th, setting the stage for a head-to-head battle for consumer attention.

Counterpoint’s data reveals particularly strong demand for the premium iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models, which saw a combined sales increase of 44% compared to their 2023 counterparts. This suggests that Apple’s strategy of offering more differentiated features and higher-end options is resonating with Chinese consumers.

Despite the impressive early performance of the iPhone 16 series, overall iPhone unit sales in China dipped 2% year-on-year during the same three-week period. This decline can be attributed to reduced sales of older iPhone models and the intensifying competition from Huawei’s Mate and Pura series.
