Apple Pencil support is coming to the iPhone Duo, and it is arriving almost as soon as the foldable reaches customers. The feature is enabled in iOS 27.2, which is expected to roll out publicly next week. Users will be able to draw, annotate and scroll in supported apps with the USB-C Apple Pencil on both the Duo’s large inner display and its outer screen.
Creative Strategies analyst Max Weinbach confirmed the change. After installing the iOS 27.2 Release Candidate on his iPhone Duo, he found that Pencil input was working. That suggests the feature is ready for launch rather than a test buried in a beta.
This is a significant shift for Apple. Since the original Apple Pencil arrived in 2015, stylus input has belonged to the iPad, and Apple has never brought it to an iPhone. The Duo changes the argument. A phone that opens into a small tablet is the first iPhone where handwriting, sketching and marking up documents feel natural rather than cramped.
Choosing the USB-C Pencil is a practical decision. It is Apple’s cheapest current stylus and it charges over a cable, so it needs no magnetic charging surface, which a phone doesn’t have. What remains unclear is whether the Apple Pencil Pro, with its squeeze gestures and barrel roll, will ever work with the Duo. Pencil Pro owners have no answer yet.
Durability is the other open question. Foldable inner displays use flexible plastic-based layers instead of rigid glass, and they are more vulnerable to pressure and scratches. Samsung faced the same problem when it added S Pen support to the Galaxy Z Fold 3. It released a special Fold Edition pen with a softer, retractable tip, and it later dropped stylus support from its newest Fold. Apple hasn’t said whether the Duo’s display needs any special care with the standard Pencil tip.
The timing is also awkward. The iPhone Duo goes on sale Friday, October 23, and reports point to severe supply constraints caused by manufacturing difficulties. Some Apple retail staff have reportedly been told to warn walk-in customers that launch-day stock is unlikely. For many buyers, Pencil support may arrive before the phone does.
