Instagram considers spinning off Reels into separate app

Meta is reportedly exploring the possibility of launching a standalone app dedicated to Reels, its short-form video feature. The project, internally referred to as “Project Ray,” aims to enhance video recommendations and potentially feature longer videos of up to three minutes.

This move could address concerns about Instagram’s increasingly cluttered feed, which currently mixes photos, Reels, and Stories. By separating Reels into its own app, Instagram could reclaim its focus on photo sharing while providing a dedicated space for short-form video content.

This potential spinoff aligns with Meta’s recent efforts to bolster its video offerings. The company recently launched a video editing app called Edits to compete with CapCut, and it has reportedly been offering incentives to creators who promote Instagram on other platforms or post exclusively on Reels.

While Meta has not officially confirmed the Reels spinoff, the move could signify a strategic shift in the company’s approach to content delivery and platform organization.
