GPT-6 Astra just landed on ChatGPT Plus, but there’s a catch

OpenAI is widening access to GPT-6 Astra, bringing its newest flagship AI model to ChatGPT Plus subscribers only days after the model’s September 3 debut. The move is significant because it puts Astra within reach of users paying $20 per month rather than reserving it entirely for higher-priced plans.

There is an important catch: Astra is not being added to the standard ChatGPT conversation experience for Plus subscribers. Instead, access is rolling out through ChatGPT Work and Codex, positioning the model primarily as a tool for coding, research and longer computer-based workflows. Availability is being introduced gradually, so some Plus accounts may not see it immediately.

Existing Plus subscriptions include a limited Astra allowance. Users who exhaust that allocation can purchase additional usage through credits, rather than needing to move to another subscription tier.

That distinction matters because Astra appears designed less around making everyday chatbot conversations marginally smarter and more around completing substantial pieces of work. OpenAI describes the model as capable of handling coding, research, software interaction and extended professional tasks. It can also work on documents, spreadsheets and presentations, including jobs involving existing templates or instructions that change as a project develops.

The headline improvements over GPT-5.6 Sol are particularly noticeable in OpenAI’s benchmark results. Astra scored 57.9% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, compared with 37.3% for Sol. On OSWorld 2.0, Astra reached 72.6% versus Sol’s 65.7%, while OpenAI reports average task completion times of roughly 40 minutes for Astra compared with around 75 minutes for its predecessor.

Long-context performance shows an even larger gap. Astra scored 96.3% on OpenAI’s 512K-to-1M context test, against 73.8% for GPT-5.6 Sol. In practical terms, stronger long-context handling could make the model more dependable when working through large projects containing extensive instructions and information accumulated across many steps.

Those figures should still be treated as indicators rather than guarantees. They come from OpenAI’s own testing, and benchmarks cannot fully capture how reliably an AI agent will perform when confronted with messy software, ambiguous instructions or unpredictable real-world workflows.

The bigger question now concerns how far GPT-6 access will eventually spread. OpenAI has not announced Astra for free ChatGPT accounts, and the previous generation suggests that may not happen. GPT-5.6 Sol remained a paid option, while free users later received the lighter GPT-5.6 Luna model.

That does not confirm OpenAI will repeat the strategy with GPT-6, and no lighter GPT-6 model has been announced. For now, the more immediate shift is clear: advanced agent-style AI is moving further down ChatGPT’s pricing ladder, even if Plus subscribers are getting a measured taste rather than unrestricted access.
