Google is giving Vids a more practical reason to exist inside Workspace: turning ordinary documents into editable video summaries. The new feature can take a Google Doc, Microsoft Word document or PDF and use AI to build a video project complete with scenes, a script and voiceover options.
The feature, called Docs to video, is designed to remove much of the setup work normally involved in translating a written document into something watchable. Users can open Google Vids, select Docs to video from the File menu and choose a supported file either from their computer or Google Drive. Supported formats include .doc, .docx and .pdf.
Google Vids then analyses the material and generates a script, breaking major sections of the document into individual video scenes. Crucially, the resulting project is not presented as a finished black box. Users can remove unwanted sections, rewrite generated text, select an AI voice and make other changes before generating the video.
That editing layer matters. AI summaries are convenient, but they can also misunderstand emphasis, flatten nuance or decide that the section you actually care about is somehow optional. Keeping the script and scene structure editable makes Docs to video potentially more useful for workplace presentations, training material, project updates and internal communications than a simple one-click document summariser.
Availability depends on the type of Workspace account. Rapid Release domains are getting access immediately across most supported paid Workspace plans and Google AI subscriptions, while Scheduled Release domains are due to begin receiving the feature from September 5 through a rollout expected to take up to 15 days.
The addition also shows how far Google Vids has moved since its announcement at Google Cloud Next in April 2024. The app started as an AI-assisted video creation tool with features including a timeline editor, generated voiceovers and access to stock media. Its capabilities have since expanded, including AI-generated soundtracks powered by Google’s Lyria technology.
Document conversion arguably gives Vids a clearer role in Google Workspace. Most office users are far more likely to have an existing report, proposal or training document than a carefully prepared video script. Turning that material directly into a starting point for a video reduces the distance between tools such as Docs and more presentation-focused formats.
There is still an obvious question around quality. Generating scenes and narration is relatively easy; identifying what deserves emphasis in a dense business document is considerably harder. Users dealing with technical, legal or otherwise sensitive information will still need to check the AI-generated script carefully rather than treating the resulting summary as authoritative.
Even so, Docs to video points toward a broader shift in productivity software. Files are increasingly becoming source material rather than fixed formats: write something once, then let AI reshape it into slides, audio, images or video. Google Vids is now positioning itself as the video end of that workflow.
