Gmail AI summaries now appear automatically on mobile for Workspace users

Google is expanding the role of Gemini, its AI assistant, within Gmail by rolling out automatic summaries of long email threads—no prompt required. This new feature, available for Google Workspace users, means that AI summaries in Gmail will now appear above lengthy email conversations, offering a faster way to catch up on complex back-and-forths.

Previously, Gmail’s AI summaries had to be triggered manually, limiting their usefulness for users managing dense inboxes. Now, Gemini will automatically identify when a summary might be helpful—such as in email threads with multiple replies—and generate it upfront. These summaries will also update in real time as new messages come in, giving users a continually refreshed overview without needing to scroll through every message.

For now, the auto-summary feature is limited to English-language emails and is rolling out exclusively to Gmail’s mobile apps. Google says it may take up to two weeks before the functionality reaches all Workspace users. There’s no word yet on whether automatic Gmail AI summaries will come to the desktop version or to personal (non-Workspace) Gmail accounts.

The update is part of Google’s broader push to integrate Gemini across its productivity suite, using generative AI to handle routine tasks like note-taking, scheduling, and summarization. While this may appeal to users overwhelmed by long email threads, it also raises questions about the balance between automation and oversight—especially in business settings where nuance can matter.

Still, for mobile-first users on Google Workspace, this shift represents a small but potentially time-saving evolution in how Gmail handles communication clutter. Whether it’s project updates, client feedback, or internal team discussions, the ability to instantly grasp the gist of a thread could be a welcome change for anyone with an overloaded inbox.
