From 12 to 18 inches, LG showcases stretchable display technology

LG Display has achieved a groundbreaking milestone in display technology with the world’s first truly stretchable display. This innovative prototype can expand from 12 to 18 inches without compromising image quality, offering a glimpse into the future of screens.

Unlike existing flexible displays that merely bend or fold, LG’s creation can stretch, twist, and contort into various forms. This breakthrough opens up a world of possibilities across diverse industries, from wearable technology to automotive displays.

The stretchable display boasts a high resolution of 100 pixels per inch and full RGB color, even when expanded to its full 18-inch size. This remarkable feat is achieved through the use of a unique silicon substrate material similar to that used in contact lenses, along with an innovative approach to display wiring.

Durability is a key feature of this technology. LG Display asserts that the prototype can withstand over 10,000 stretching cycles. Furthermore, the display utilizes micro-LED light sources, ensuring consistent image quality even under extreme temperatures or external shocks.

Potential applications for this technology are vast. Imagine curved automotive displays that respond to touch gestures, or wearable displays integrated into clothing for real-time information access. LG envisions this technology revolutionizing sectors like fashion, wearables, and mobility.

This development is the culmination of a national project led by South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. LG Display spearheaded a consortium of 19 research institutes, exceeding the project’s initial goal of a 20% elongation rate by achieving an impressive 50% stretchability.

LG’s stretchable display marks a significant leap forward in screen technology, promising to reshape how we interact with information and our surroundings.
