Disney+ changes its ad rules, but what about MENA subscribers?

Disney+ has quietly rewritten part of its subscriber agreement to make clear that every service plan may contain advertising and promotional material, including tiers marketed around an ad-free viewing experience.

The updated terms say Disney+ plans can include promotional content, sponsorships and advertisements before or after movies and shows, as well as within channels, live or near-live programming, special events and third-party service content. The important distinction is where those ads can appear: the wording does not necessarily mean subscribers on premium plans will suddenly encounter traditional commercial breaks halfway through a movie.

That distinction matters because Disney+ has historically separated subscriptions partly around advertising. In the US, its Basic plan costs $11.99 per month and includes ads, while Premium costs $18.99 monthly or $189.99 annually and continues to be presented as offering “no ads.” Under the revised agreement, that promise appears compatible with promotional or advertising material appearing around playback rather than interrupting the content itself.

For subscribers, however, it makes the definition of an ad-free streaming service increasingly complicated. A plan can potentially avoid mid-roll commercials while still exposing viewers to sponsorships, trailers or other promotional material before and after what they actually selected to watch.

For Disney+ subscribers in the Middle East and North Africa, there is an important caveat: there is currently no confirmation that these changes will be introduced in MENA. The reported subscriber communication concerns the updated agreement and messaging seen in other markets, so it should not be assumed that customers across the region will see the same advertising changes.

Disney+ is already available across several Middle Eastern markets. The UAE App Store currently lists a monthly plan at AED 42.99 and an annual plan at AED 384.99, but regional pricing or availability alone does not indicate that the revised advertising approach will be implemented locally.

One notable exception mentioned in Disney’s advertising policies is Junior Mode, where child-focused profiles are not subjected to advertisements or promotional material.

What also remains unclear is how aggressively Disney intends to use the flexibility created by its revised subscriber agreement. The language establishes what the service can potentially show, but it does not establish that every subscriber will immediately see more advertising or specify how frequently promotional material might appear.

For now, this is primarily a contractual change rather than confirmation of a sudden flood of commercials. And for MENA subscribers specifically, there is no confirmed change yet — making Disney’s regional implementation the key detail to watch next.
