Could Elon Musk become the new owner of TikTok in the US?

The fate of TikTok in the United States hangs in the balance as the deadline for a potential ban or sale approaches.  In a surprising turn of events, reports suggest that Chinese government officials are considering selling TikTok’s US operations to Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly Twitter).

While the Chinese government would prefer TikTok to remain under the ownership of its parent company, ByteDance, officials are reportedly exploring contingency plans in case the US ban cannot be averted. Selling the app’s US operations to Musk is one of the options being considered.

Acquiring TikTok’s US operations could be a strategic move for Musk. The platform boasts over 170 million users in the US, a massive audience that could significantly boost X’s appeal to advertisers.  Furthermore, the vast amount of data generated by TikTok could be invaluable for Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI.

It’s important to note that these discussions are still in the early stages. It’s unclear whether ByteDance is aware of the Chinese government’s deliberations or if Musk is actively involved in any negotiations.

Interestingly, Musk has previously expressed his support for TikTok’s continued operation in the US, despite acknowledging that a ban would benefit X. His recent actions, however, suggest that he may be open to the idea of acquiring the platform.

The coming days will be crucial for TikTok’s future in the United States. Whether the app will be banned, sold to Musk, or remain under ByteDance’s ownership remains to be seen.
