OpenAI’s ChatGPT is continuing its rapid climb in user engagement, with the company reporting it is on pace to reach 700 million weekly active users this week. This marks a significant jump from the 500 million reported at the end of March, representing a fourfold increase compared to the same period last year.

According to OpenAI executives, part of the growth has been fueled by new capabilities, particularly the upgraded image generation tool powered by the GPT-4 model, introduced in March. The feature sparked a surge in activity, with more than 130 million users collectively creating over 700 million images within days of its release. While image creation has been a strong driver, the app’s broader adoption spans a range of use cases, from personal learning and creative projects to workplace productivity.

The platform’s paid tier is also expanding. OpenAI’s COO recently disclosed that ChatGPT now has 5 million paying business users, up from 3 million in June. This suggests increasing reliance on premium features, particularly among professional teams integrating AI into daily workflows.

Recent data from market research firm Sensor Tower highlights the app’s sustained engagement. Users, on average, open ChatGPT on more than 12 days each month, ranking just behind major platforms like Google Search and X. Average session length is also notable, with users spending about 16 minutes per day in the app during the first half of 2025.

The growth trajectory underscores how conversational AI is becoming a routine part of digital habits for both individuals and organizations. While OpenAI’s rapid scaling reflects the public’s appetite for accessible AI tools, it also places the company in an increasingly competitive space, with rival platforms pushing their own generative AI offerings. How OpenAI maintains user interest—beyond periodic feature launches—will likely determine whether this momentum can be sustained over the long term.
