ByteDance to shutting down TikTok Music globally

ByteDance has announced the closure of its music streaming service, TikTok Music, effective November 28th. The service, currently available in five countries, will no longer be accessible after that date, with renewals and refund requests ceasing as well.

The move highlights a strategic shift for ByteDance, focusing less on direct competition with established music streaming services and more on leveraging TikTok’s undeniable influence in music discovery. The company emphasizes the success of its “Add to Music” feature, which enables users to seamlessly add tracks to their playlists on partner platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music.

TikTok Music, originally rooted in the ByteDance product Resso, never quite gained the global traction the company hoped for. This decision comes amidst a complex relationship between TikTok and the music industry, with recent disagreements over royalties causing temporary disruptions.

Although TikTok has become a powerhouse for music discovery and a launchpad for artists, the music streaming landscape remains fiercely competitive. ByteDance’s strategic pivot acknowledges the strength of existing platforms and focuses on TikTok’s proven ability to drive music consumption through viral trends and artist exposure.
