Dragon’s Dogma 2 was always a difficult game to recommend without a few warnings attached. When Capcom released the sequel in 2024, it delivered an ambitious open-world RPG with remarkable combat, unpredictable encounters and a world that rewarded players willing to lose themselves in it. Unfortunately, it also arrived with performance issues, an underwhelming story and several design decisions that made the experience unnecessarily exhausting.

For all its shortcomings, there was something special about Dragon’s Dogma 2. Few RPGs could match the satisfaction of climbing a towering monster while your Pawns desperately attempted to keep you alive, or the excitement of discovering an unexpected adventure while travelling between settlements.

Two years later, Capcom has returned with Dark Arisen, a substantial expansion that brings a new region, a complete storyline, tougher enemies and meaningful improvements to the experience.

What makes Dark Arisen particularly interesting is how it builds upon the foundations of the original. Capcom has clearly identified several areas where Dragon’s Dogma 2 struggled, introducing changes that make the adventure more rewarding without sacrificing the mechanics that gave it character.

The result is a considerably stronger RPG experience and a compelling reason to return to the world of the Arisen.

A Journey Into the Unknown

Dark Arisen begins with a mystery that challenges one of the central principles of Dragon’s Dogma lore.

Reports have emerged of another Arisen in Norgan, a distant northern region. Given that the existence of a second Arisen should be impossible under the established rules governing the world, the rumours demand investigation.

Captain Brant, a familiar face from the original campaign, helps initiate the journey north. From there, players find themselves travelling into an unfamiliar territory with its own inhabitants, history and dangers. The premise works particularly well because it gives returning players an immediate reason to become invested. Rather than relying on the political struggles that dominated much of the original game’s narrative, Dark Arisen introduces a more focused mystery with consequences that extend into the broader mythology of the series.

The expansion’s storytelling benefits from a more deliberate approach to character development. Norgan’s inhabitants have their own motivations, while the larger mystery provides a consistent thread connecting the region’s main quests. Side quests also play a more substantial role in building the world. Some offer additional insight into the people and conflicts shaping Norgan, providing reasons to explore beyond collecting rewards or gaining experience. There are still conventional RPG errands scattered throughout the adventure, but the stronger narrative direction gives the overall experience a sense of purpose that was occasionally missing from the original.

Most importantly, the story appears willing to take risks with established Dragon’s Dogma mythology. Without spoiling the revelations, the mystery surrounding the second Arisen gives the expansion an intriguing foundation that remains relevant throughout the journey.

Norgan Is Beautiful, Brutal and Worth Exploring

The biggest addition in Dark Arisen is Norgan, a sprawling northern region dominated by frozen mountains, dangerous wilderness and violent weather.

It presents a considerable visual departure from the landscapes of Vermund and Battahl. Snow-covered valleys and towering cliffs replace much of the original game’s familiar scenery, while the changing weather introduces additional challenges during exploration. Norgan’s greatest strength is the way its environment affects the adventure itself.

Blizzards can severely restrict visibility, interfere with navigation and drain stamina. Frozen terrain presents its own hazards, while falling ice and other environmental dangers create additional complications during encounters. The new freezing status effect further encourages players to consider their equipment and surroundings rather than relying entirely on offensive power.

These mechanics give Norgan a distinct identity. Travelling through its wilderness requires preparation, and even a relatively straightforward journey can become dangerous when the weather turns against you.

The geography also makes exploration more engaging. Norgan features considerable verticality, with elevated routes, underground areas and hidden locations encouraging players to investigate their surroundings.

While the region is smaller than the original game’s combined world, it feels more densely designed. Exploration frequently leads to additional encounters, equipment discoveries or unexpected detours.

This density works particularly well with Dragon’s Dogma 2’s approach to open-world design. The series has always been at its strongest when players encounter situations organically, and Norgan provides plenty of opportunities for those moments to emerge.

The environment itself becomes an important part of the challenge, giving the expansion an atmosphere that feels appropriate for an adventure intended for experienced Arisen.

The North Doesn’t Welcome the Unprepared

Anyone expecting to arrive in Norgan with a reasonably powerful character and immediately dominate its enemies may be in for a surprise.

Dark Arisen introduces a substantial increase in difficulty, with even ordinary encounters presenting a serious threat to characters that comfortably handled the original game’s challenges.

A character around level 40 is generally considered a reasonable starting point, although additional levels and appropriate equipment can make the transition considerably easier. A significant problem with Dragon’s Dogma 2 was how quickly its combat could become manageable once players had invested enough time into levelling their characters and acquiring stronger equipment.

Dark Arisen restores much of the danger. Enemies hit harder, encounters demand greater attention and surviving extended battles requires better coordination with your Pawns. The familiar combat system remains largely intact. Players can still climb large monsters, exploit elemental weaknesses and combine the abilities of different vocations to devastating effect.

That foundation remains excellent. The Pawn system continues to distinguish Dragon’s Dogma from other action RPGs, turning encounters into chaotic battles where coordination can make the difference between victory and defeat.

With stronger opponents, the abilities and composition of your party become significantly more important. However, increased difficulty also highlights some of the combat system’s longstanding weaknesses.

Characters can still suffer frustrating knockdowns, leaving them vulnerable during lengthy recovery animations. Large enemies occasionally overwhelm players through sheer damage and resistance rather than demanding particularly sophisticated strategies.

The absence of a traditional lock-on system also remains an adjustment for players more familiar with contemporary action RPGs. These issues don’t undermine the overall quality of combat, but they can make certain encounters feel more punishing than satisfying.

Dark Arisen provides a welcome challenge, although it sometimes inherits the original game’s tendency to confuse difficulty with inconvenience.

A More Rewarding Approach to Loot

One of the most meaningful additions is the new relic appraisal system.

Throughout Norgan, players can acquire special relics from defeated enemies, treasure chests and other discoveries. These items can then be taken to an appraiser, who reveals the equipment or rewards contained within them.

The system introduces an enjoyable element of anticipation into exploration. There is genuine motivation to keep searching for valuable relics because the next discovery might produce a weapon or piece of armour capable of transforming your character’s effectiveness. It also helps address one of the more frustrating elements of Dragon’s Dogma 2: inventory management.

Relics are relatively lightweight before appraisal, allowing players to continue adventuring without constantly worrying about becoming overburdened by equipment. Given how heavily the original game emphasised carrying capacity, this is a particularly welcome adjustment.

The expansion also introduces additional crafting opportunities and equipment better suited to Norgan’s challenges. These systems create a satisfying progression loop. Stronger enemies offer opportunities to acquire better rewards, which subsequently allow players to venture into more dangerous territory. There is, however, a downside to this approach. The random nature of relic appraisal means that carefully crafted equipment can sometimes become obsolete shortly after investing valuable resources into it.

Players who prefer predictable progression may also find the system frustrating when repeated appraisals fail to produce meaningful upgrades. Nevertheless, the additional rewards make exploration feel more worthwhile, especially for experienced players who had little remaining incentive to search the original game’s wilderness.

More Reasons to Experiment With Your Vocation

Beyond equipment, Dark Arisen expands character development through additional vocation abilities and upgrades.

Obelisks of Benediction scattered throughout Norgan provide opportunities to acquire powerful enhancements, giving players more reasons to experiment with their existing builds.

For example, the Magick Archer’s Shadebind Bolt introduces a useful means of slowing enemies, creating additional opportunities for the rest of the party to unleash powerful attacks.

These additions are particularly valuable because they expand upon a combat system that already offers impressive versatility. The different vocations encourage distinct approaches to encounters, and their abilities can complement one another in interesting ways.

Dark Arisen provides further opportunities to experiment with those combinations, especially when confronting the expansion’s more demanding enemies. The additional abilities do not represent a complete overhaul of combat, but they introduce enough variety to keep character progression interesting.

The expansion also introduces the Lost Rites, a collection of 12 new dungeon challenges distributed throughout the original game’s world. These provide additional combat encounters and rewards, giving returning players a reason to revisit locations beyond Norgan itself.

Their inclusion adds welcome longevity to the expansion, particularly for players interested in testing their characters against increasingly difficult encounters. Combined with the substantial amount of content available in Norgan, these dungeons make Dark Arisen feel unusually generous for an RPG expansion.

The QOL Dragon’s Dogma 2 Needed

One of the original game’s most divisive features was its approach to fast travel.

Capcom wanted players to experience the dangers and unpredictability of travelling across its world. In principle, the idea made sense. Some of Dragon’s Dogma 2’s best moments happened because players were forced to journey through unfamiliar territory.

In practice, repeated journeys could become tedious, particularly when quests demanded substantial backtracking. The introduction of the Eternal Ferrystone through updates to the base game, alongside the greater availability of fast-travel locations, makes an enormous difference to Dark Arisen.

Players can now move between important destinations without the same restrictions that previously made travel unnecessarily time-consuming. Crucially, travelling on foot remains rewarding because Norgan is filled with encounters and discoveries.

An Expansion With Remarkable Value

Perhaps the strongest argument in Dark Arisen’s favour is the amount of content available.

While completion times will naturally vary, published reviews report anything from roughly 25 to 30 hours for a substantial playthrough to significantly longer adventures involving side content and optional activities. That places Dark Arisen comfortably among the more ambitious RPG expansions in recent years.

The main storyline offers a meaningful adventure, while Norgan’s optional discoveries provide further opportunities for exploration. The Lost Rites dungeons add another layer of content, and the expanded equipment systems encourage players to continue developing their characters long after reaching the end of the central narrative.

There is also additional post-story content for players who want to push their builds further. Importantly, the appeal extends beyond simply providing more hours of gameplay.

Dark Arisen improves the structure surrounding Dragon’s Dogma 2’s strongest mechanics, making the familiar cycle of travelling, fighting and improving your character considerably more satisfying.

Newcomers should still approach it with some caution. The expansion is designed around players who have already spent considerable time learning the mechanics of Dragon’s Dogma 2, and the difficulty increase may prove overwhelming for anyone attempting to rush directly into Norgan.

Returning players, however, will find plenty of reasons to invest another substantial amount of time in the adventure.

Verdict

Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen represents a substantial improvement upon an already ambitious RPG.

Norgan offers a beautifully realised environment filled with meaningful exploration, while its challenging encounters restore much of the danger that made the original game’s early hours so memorable.

The stronger narrative provides a welcome sense of direction, and the relic appraisal system makes the pursuit of better equipment far more rewarding. Improvements to fast travel and technical performance also address some of the most significant complaints surrounding the original release.

There are still familiar frustrations. Combat can occasionally feel unfair, repeated knockdowns remain irritating and the increased difficulty may discourage less experienced players. Nevertheless, the overall package demonstrates how much stronger Dragon’s Dogma 2 can be when its ambitious systems are supported by more thoughtful progression and world design.

For returning players, Dark Arisen offers a compelling reason to pick up their weapons and reunite with their Pawns. For newcomers, it helps make the complete Dragon’s Dogma 2 experience a much more attractive proposition.

Two years after its troubled debut, Dragon’s Dogma 2 has finally received the expansion capable of fulfilling much of its original promise.
